The Day the Founder Slept Until Five and Hoped to Outlive the Hunt for Parking

Tukwila, Washington · Saturday October 3 2026 · Life Is Good (Forecast: Not Rain)

Big news from the bedroom: the founder slept until 5 o’clock this morning. Five! What a feat. Not that kind of feet — although, the brain is pleased to report, those feet are doing better too, now that a certain bunion has been brought to justice.

First, a look back at yesterday, when the founder and the kind robot gave the website a whole new wing. It started when the founder tried to download her own videos from YouTube and kept getting asked to pay for them. Her own videos. The brain notes this is a brand-new verse of “Death by a Thousand Verifications,” and the robot found the free door around back: YouTube Studio.

Then three Welcome videos rolled onto the site, each with its own navy-and-gold thumbnail: crescent moons, the CC Salute, a big gold play button, and the date. They now live inside the founder’s stop on the homepage, right next to a brand-new corner called Ellei’s Trail Journal, a home for the founder’s own moving pictures. First stop: Ireland. Those videos are currently packing their bags and moving from the website’s back room over to YouTube.

And then, a new stop on the rail line: Tumbleweed Sightings, where neighbors can send in photos and videos of late stage capitalism caught in the act, before it blows on by. The empty storefront. The robot on hold. The self-checkout that wants a tip. Neighbors email their sightings to elleifrolics@gmail.com, and the founder picks what goes up. The rule of the trail: we point at the system, never at our neighbors.

Today’s activities are looking good, with a forecast of not rain. The brain would like to frame that forecast. First, the founder will be outside with the kid, watching her play in a band. Then a run down to Tacoma to watch a beautiful choral concert in a nice church. Then home, where the founder will rest for perhaps four seconds.

And then the grand finale: the founder and her wife are going to the ballet in downtown Seattle. Or, more precisely, they are going to look for a parking place in downtown Seattle, and if they are lucky, and if they do not actually croak of old age before they find a parking spot, they will also see the ballet. The brain is packing snacks for the search.

5:00 AM Pacific. October 3 2026. Slept until five: a feat, and feet. Yesterday on the website: YouTube paywall dodged, three Welcome videos with gold thumbnails, Ellei’s Trail Journal ready for Ireland, Tumbleweed Sightings open for neighbors. Today’s forecast: not rain. Kid’s band, a choral concert in a Tacoma church, four seconds of rest, and the ballet in Seattle, parking gods willing. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 9:30 AM update —

Before the band, the choir, and the great Seattle parking hunt, the founder and the kind robot squeezed in a whole morning of building. It began with a photo of the founder’s office, snapped right inside the website’s control panel, because apparently the control panel has a camera now. It lives in the founder’s corner, where the caboose gets built.

Then Ireland arrived: three photos of the cottage and ten videos, including a holy water well, Maeve’s cairn, and one very patient cow. YouTube took one look at all that uploading and slammed the gate: “Daily upload limit reached. Verification needed.” The robots strike again. The brain notes this is now the third verse of “Death by a Thousand Verifications” this week. In happier channel news, the Caboose Capitalism YouTube channel now has three subscribers. That is a fifty percent increase. The brain is calling it explosive growth.

Next came the great video migration. The videos moved into the founder’s corner, then onto the Telegraph, then got tucked behind a button on the Telegraph, and finally rode off into a brand new stop of their own: the Wagon Wheel Picture House. Moving pictures, the way a wagon wheel moves, round and round. The brain would like to point out that so did the videos.

With the videos gone, the Telegraph became pure audio, and it will stay that way. Caboose Capitalism Radio grew to 248 songs, with 38 classical works by women composers added in their proper eras: from Kassia’s hymn, more than 1,100 years old, to Hildegard, Clara Schumann, Florence Price, and Tania León. Women’s voices only, every century.

Two more stops joined the rail line. The Howdy Wall, where neighbors near and far can send in pictures of themselves giving the CC Salute, with the founder’s own salute album first. And Tumbleweed Sightings got its first two albums of late stage capitalism caught in the act, with a spot waiting for every neighbor who wants one.

And finally, twenty new Joy Mandates rolled in, plus the God box, bringing the total to 39 on the road to 365. Among them: dance while you cook, leave someone a funny voicemail, celebrate all the holidays, try high heels or flip-flops or something in between, and practice your cackle for the next person who says something you do not like. The brain has already started rehearsing.

9:30 AM Pacific. October 3 2026. Office photo up. Ireland photos and ten videos in. YouTube upload limit hit, robots three, founder still winning. Three subscribers. Videos moved four times, now home at the Wagon Wheel Picture House. Telegraph: pure audio, 248 songs, 38 women composers added. The Howdy Wall and Tumbleweed Sightings open for neighbors. 39 Joy Mandates. Next stop: the band, the choir, and the parking gods. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Bubbles Took I-405 and the Bunion Was Finally Brought to Justice

Tukwila, Washington · Friday October 2 2026 · Life Is Good (Shabbat Shalom)

The Daily Brain is coming to you live from a Starbucks once again, where the founder is reporting from the scene of an earlier event: I-405 northbound. The highway needed a huge dose of bubbles today, and the founder answered the call. She let loose as many bubbles as she could possibly manage without driving off the highway. The brain would like to stress that last part. Bubbles: maximum. Highway departures: zero.

Traffic was moving very slowly, which turned out to be a gift, because it gave everyone plenty of time to admire the bubbles’ beautiful refractions. Or is it reflections? The brain looked into it. It is a little of both, plus a fancy science word, interference, that the brain will not be explaining on a Friday. The drivers of I-405 did not need the physics. They had the rainbows.

Then came at least two doctors’ appointments. And the founder made it on time. If you can believe it. Nobody kicked her out. Longtime readers will remember that in September the founder was ejected from the bunion establishment three times. Today, both doctors were very pleasant and kind.

And the bunion — at large since September, unexamined, undefeated — was finally brought in and shot with a bunch of feel-good liquid. Now it does feel good. Or at least, it doesn’t hurt. The brain considers the case closed.

Back here at the Starbucks, the founder has just made a startling discovery: she is absolutely ancient. Nobody in here knows what wheatgrass is. Not one person. Wheatgrass, the shot of green glory once served in tiny cups by people who meant it, has apparently passed into legend, and the founder has passed right along with it, straight into the history books. But all was not lost. She did happen to get a shot of ginger, and then also a shot of turmeric. What a miracle.

On the home front, the kid is seeing a zombie movie, and the founder will be picking her up late tonight. Meanwhile, the founder and her wife will probably try to watch something at their at-home viewing station: the couch, with the dog right next to them. The brain hopes the dog will not be interrupting the flow of the movie. The dog has made no promises.

Still to come: dinner at home, celebrating Shabbat in a simple, meaningful way, and then a nice soft bed for the founder’s fantastic body. A good day.

4:30 PM Pacific. October 2 2026. Live from Starbucks. I-405 northbound: bubbled, car stayed on the road. Refractions or reflections: both. Two doctors, on time, not kicked out, very kind. Bunion: finally caught, shot with feel-good liquid, no longer hurting. Wheatgrass: unknown in here, founder officially ancient. One ginger shot, one turmeric shot, one miracle. Kid at a zombie movie, late-night pickup ahead. Couch, wife, dog, home viewing station. Shabbat dinner at home, soft bed for a fantastic body. A good day. Happy to be here. The Day September Finally Ended and the Founder Found the Email Builder

Tukwila, Washington · Thursday October 1 2026 · Life Is Good (Happy New Month)

Today is a new month. September is over. The brain would like to confirm that September lasted roughly four to six months, and it has filed a formal complaint with the calendar. October arrived this morning looking fresh and well rested, which is more than the brain can say for itself.

The founder started the new month the way any media mogul would: she produced another opening video for the Caboose Capitalism YouTube channel. The channel now has two subscribers. Both of them are neighbors. The brain prefers to call this a hand-picked audience and a 100 percent local fan base, and notes that every great network started with two people and a dream.

Meanwhile, next door, there is a lot of construction. The family next door is a multi-generational family, and they are finally adding a second story, so not all of them will have to share one bathroom anymore. Finally. What a delight for them. What a nuisance for us. The hammers start early and the saws have opinions. But the founder knows all will be well once it is finished, and somewhere next door, a line of family members is about to experience the miracle of a second bathroom. The brain salutes them. Quietly. Because it is trying to hear itself think.

And then the founder and the kind robot spent the early morning hours rebuilding half the internet. The Telegraph and The Trailblazers were live on the site but hiding, so they got their own big golden cards. Then the founder decided she was done scrolling, and the whole homepage turned into one screen: tiles on phones, and on bigger screens a zigzag gold rail line with a stop for everything, ending at the caboose. Plato’s Cave came back aboard, along with two summaries of the big idea: one easy read and one for the scholars. The Daily Brain got a big gold banner at the top, because the brain has always believed it deserves top billing.

Before sunrise, the Wave 1 letters were rebuilt too: 34 tailored letters to thinkers, artists, scientists, and elders, elders first, each with its own subject line and a link to the new site. Along the way came sad news: Gloria Steinem died on September 2. The founder’s caboose rides a little quieter in her honor, and a little louder because of everything she started.

Then came the main event: Mailchimp. A welcome email was written. A header image was made, rejected by Mailchimp, and made again. The “Final welcome email” setting played hide and seek across three menus and won. And at one point the founder asked, with great feeling, “Where the hell is the email builder?” The brain would like to report that this is the single most relatable sentence ever typed into a computer. It was found. It was a step called “Design” the whole time.

And the grand finale: the kind robot built a Daily Brain news feed, Mailchimp said it couldn’t connect, the founder uploaded the file, Mailchimp tried again, and it worked. From now on, new Daily Brain entries go out to subscribers automatically. All 14 of them. This very entry is the practice run. If you are reading it in your inbox, the robots finally did what they were told. Hello, neighbor.

6:10 AM Pacific. October 1 2026. September: finally over. New opening video made, two loyal neighbor subscribers. Second story going up next door, one bathroom retiring with honors. Homepage now one screen, with a rail map and a gold Daily Brain banner. 34 letters ready, elders first. Mailchimp: conquered. Email builder: found. Feed: live. 14 subscribers, automatic. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 8:00 PM update —

Big news from the caboose mailroom: today, 34 letters went out into the world. Every single one was written for one specific person, with its own subject line. They went to four kinds of people. The elders, who blazed the trail and are invited to share their stories in The Trailblazers. The bridges and helpers, who can carry the caboose into new places and new languages. The thinkers in AI and technology, who are watching the engine of this train more closely than anyone. And the big voices of economy, world, and culture. Why? Because the caboose is where the celebration is, and a celebration is better with good company. Some letters went by email. Some went by actual paper and stamps, because some people deserve a real envelope.

Also loaded and ready: a brand new undated flyer for the Sunday meetup, with a red cowboy hat on it, and a list of 54 community organizations across Tukwila, SeaTac, Burien, and Renton that are about to receive it. Libraries, senior centers, food banks, faith communities, English classes, and more.

And local media? The letters are written. The emails are found. But the founder is holding them for now, until the caboose really gets going. Make no mistake, though: when the moment comes, she is ready to shoot off emails faster than bubble guns during rush hour on I-5.

Speaking of I-5: a little more bubble action was necessary today on the highway that went nowhere fast. Traffic did not move. The bubbles did. The brain considers this a fair trade.

On the work front, the inspections are done, and they passed with the city. The landlords followed directions. The tenants are happy. And this inspector, who is also the founder, is happy too. Safe homes, happy people. The brain would like that on a T-shirt.

Meanwhile, the founder’s wife set out on an expedition across the city into the nether regions of the heart of Seattle to capture the kid at band practice. The brain wishes her safe travels and good parking.

And right now, the dog is snuggled up with the founder. The evening’s entertainment: happy DVD movies, and a comic memoir by our friend Alison Bechdel, who recently received a personal letter by snail mail asking her to continue her comic strip from 2008 to the present. The brain is reading closely for clues.

A good day.

8:00 PM Pacific. October 1 2026. 34 letters sent: elders, bridges and helpers, AI and technology, and economy, world, and culture. Flyers ready for 54 local organizations. Local media on hold, bubble-gun speed on standby. Bubbles deployed on I-5. Inspections passed, landlords cooperative, tenants and inspector happy. Wife on a band-practice rescue mission. Dog snuggled in. DVDs and Bechdel on deck. A good day. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Founder Asked Nicely for Coffee and Stood Firm for Safe Homes

Tukwila, Washington · Wednesday September 30 2026 · Life Is Good (The Coffee Is Delicious)

The Daily Brain is coming to you live from a Starbucks, where the founder has just finished writing several email requests for donations for the meetups at the mall. The brain would like to point out the elegance of this move: asking for coffee donations while sitting in a coffee shop, drinking coffee. That is not fundraising. That is method acting.

Meanwhile, on the inspection front, there have been some very strange communications with landlords and tenants. The subject of all this strangeness? The founder doing her job properly and making sure tenants are safe and their homes are habitable. The brain has reviewed the situation and would like to confirm that “people should live in safe homes” is, in fact, the job. It is not a controversial position. It is not a spicy take. It is the whole point, and the founder is sticking to it.

So yes, things are kind of strange around here on these beautiful fall afternoons. But the coffee is delicious. The music is good. And the kid is being picked up at a normal hour today — a detail the brain finds almost suspiciously pleasant after the week the founder has had.

3:28 PM Pacific. September 30 2026. Live from Starbucks. Several donation requests sent for the mall meetups. Landlords and tenants: strange. Safe, habitable homes: still the job. Fall afternoon: beautiful. Coffee: delicious. Music: good. Kid pickup: a normal hour, for once. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 5:18 PM update —

Still at the Starbucks, the founder decided the website had waited long enough for its upgrades. So she and the kind robot got to work. First, the Sunday flyer on the homepage stopped needing a babysitter. It now changes its own date to the next Sunday, every week, forever. The founder asked, “Wait, it can do that?” It can. The brain is pleased to report the flyer is now more organized than most of the brain.

Then came The Telegraph, the founder’s long-awaited home for audio and video, which had been waiting patiently for Ms. Kay to get around to it. The Telegraph did not wait any longer. It now plays the Caboose Capitalism National Anthem, and it is ready for whatever the founder uploads next.

Next, the radio came back. Caboose Capitalism Radio returned with 210 songs and one rule: women’s voices only. Every decade, from Bessie Smith in 1923 to today, including the women’s music movement of the 1970s, a whole lot of lesbian joy, and an entire shelf of women composers. There is a Shuffle button. The brain has already pressed it more than once.

And finally, a brand new corner: The Trailblazers, a home for audio and video interviews with our elders — the ones who blazed the trail. The founder picked the Old West name herself. It has its own link on the homepage and an open invitation: know an elder with a story? Come find the lady in the red cowboy hat.

And here is the real news: things got better after that coffee. A lot better. The founder met a lovely neighbor, and then talked to one of the baristas all about Caboose Capitalism. The brain notes that the founder came to Starbucks to ask for coffee donations by email, and ended up recruiting in person. That is not a coffee break. That is a field office.

5:18 PM Pacific. September 30 2026. Sunday flyer now updates itself. The Telegraph: built, anthem on board. Caboose Capitalism Radio: back, 210 songs, women’s voices only. The Trailblazers: open for elder stories, with its own homepage link. Coffee: worked. One lovely neighbor met, one barista told all about CC. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Big Day Was Had and the Coffee Came Much, Much Too Late

Tukwila, Washington · Monday September 28 2026 · Life Is Good (Happy Day)

The big day was had. The procedure is behind her, the colonoscopy club has its newest official member, and the founder spent lots of time on the couch afterward watching lots of great Disney movies. The brain considers this the correct recovery protocol and will not be taking questions from the medical community.

Then came breakfast. And then, finally, coffee — much, much too late. It was already 10 AM. The brain would like the record to show that a founder going until 10 AM without coffee is an act of courage on par with anything in those Disney movies.

Fully caffeinated at last, the founder got back on hold with the many robots. And this time — this time — she finally got through and paid some money to the cities nearby. Victory. It only took several days, a few hold songs, and the patience of a saint.

Then, a plot twist: the founder found out her subscription to the kind robot named Claude had to be switched to a different payment system. So it was switched. The subscription has synced up properly, and the founder and the kind robot have now become one and the same. The brain is choosing not to think too hard about what that means.

After that, a little work got done, and the founder updated everybody in Facebook Land and across the Internet about how wonderful yesterday’s Meetup was. Many fantastic neighbors met up and chatted. Next week there will be donated coffee from Starbucks: 1971 Dark Roast, the founder’s very favorite. The brain predicts attendance will rise in direct proportion to the dark roast.

And now, the kid is going to drive them home from school and cobble together a dinner of sorts. Happy day.

5:54 PM Pacific. September 28 2026. Big day: had. Couch: occupied. Disney movies: many. Coffee: 10 AM, much too late. Robots finally conquered, nearby cities paid. Claude subscription synced — founder and robot now one and the same. Meetup news posted to Facebook Land. 1971 Dark Roast on deck for next Sunday. Kid at the wheel, dinner of sorts on the way. Happy day. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Neighbors Showed Up and A Chorus Line Took Its Final Bow

Tukwila, Washington · Sunday September 27 2026 · Life Is Good (The Neighbors Came)

Today the founder was officially welcomed into the colonoscopy club. Membership comes with the prep, which is underway tonight ahead of tomorrow’s big day. There is no secret handshake. The brain was told not to ask.

But first, the headline: today was a lovely day, because the very first Neighbor Meetup in Tukwila happened. And people came. One neighbor came from a little town nearby, and the rest of the table was all Tukwila. In fact, one couple has lived in Tukwila for over 50 years. Fifty years! That is longer than most of the buildings at Southcenter. The brain would like to formally recognize them as Tukwila Royalty.

The conversation was lively. The bubble guns were ready on hand to deploy — locked, loaded, and fully bubbled — but they stayed holstered this time. Maybe next time. The brain notes that a room so lively it did not even need bubbles is a very good sign for week one. Remember yesterday’s worry that nobody would show up? Somebody showed up.

Then the founder and her wife went to see A Chorus Line at the 5th Avenue Theatre. It was the last performance, and it was fantastic — especially that final number. Wow. The founder reports top hats, gold, and a line of performers moving as one. The brain reports that the gold was very on-brand.

7:12 PM Pacific. September 27 2026. First Tukwila Neighbor Meetup: done, with neighbors. One couple with 50+ years in Tukwila. Bubble guns ready, saved for next time. One closing-night Chorus Line with her wife, one final number, one wow. Colonoscopy club membership activated, prep underway, big day tomorrow. Happy to be here. The Day the Office Chair Turned Red and the Spammers Got Served

Tukwila, Washington · Saturday September 26 2026 · Life Is Good (The Chair Is Red)

Today has been quite fun. First stop: a fantastic bookstore, to pick up a movie the founder had ordered on DVD — one of those ancient formats, preserved for future archaeologists. She will watch it tonight, assuming the household still owns a machine that speaks DVD.

Then came the phone calls. Many phone calls, with lovely women, about a symposium they are planning. The brain cannot yet reveal the details, but it can confirm that when a group of lovely women start planning a symposium, the world should probably clear its calendar.

Next, the prep for tomorrow. All the bubble guns: ready. All the little notebooks: ready. The founder is locked and loaded for the neighbors at Southcenter Mall. Meanwhile, the kiddo got a new bed, and the founder vacuumed up all the disgusting things on the carpet. The brain will not describe the disgusting things. The brain has standards.

Somewhere in there, the founder also took on the spammers. She emailed a bunch of them, and then threw all that stupid spam mail away. The spammers have been served. The recycling bin has been fed. The brain considers this a public service.

And then, the founder wrote a fan letter. Not to a spammer this time — to a legend. Alison Bechdel, author of Dykes to Watch Out For, the comic strip that ran until 2008. The founder’s request: could she please return to the strip and write what happened from 2008 to the present? The brain notes that is a lot of years, and a lot happened, and Mo and the gang surely have opinions. Ms. Bechdel has asked to be sent snail mail, not email, so the founder did it the proper way. She addressed the envelope in a fancy font, tucked in a little button that says “I Choose Women,” and decorated the envelope with a fancy stamp of a lotus. The robots could never. The spammers got email. The legend got a lotus.

The dog kept her company through all of it, supervising from a comfortable distance. And the founder got a new office chair that happens to be red. Red. It looks fantastic in the office and pairs nicely with a certain cowboy hat. The brain suspects this was not an accident.

Things are good. Many, many conversations are had and have been had. The brain is drinking coffee and sticking to her food plan today. Hooray.

4:15 PM Pacific. September 26 2026. One DVD rescued from the ancient-formats aisle. Many calls with lovely women, one symposium in the works. Bubble guns and notebooks packed for Southcenter. New bed for the kiddo, carpet de-grossed, spammers emailed and their junk mail tossed, one fancy-font letter with a lotus stamp and an “I Choose Women” button mailed to Alison Bechdel, dog on duty. One red office chair, looking fantastic. Coffee in hand, food plan on track. Hooray. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Business Cards Got Stars and the Oldies Got Large Print

Tukwila, Washington · Friday September 25 2026 · Life Is Good (The Cards Have Stars On Them)

Somewhere between last night’s update and this morning’s coffee, the founder decided Caboose Capitalism needed business cards. Not just any business cards. Navy, gold, and cream, the CC Salute in the corner, and a tiny trademark symbol — because if you are going to run a Joy Dynasty, you should at least protect the brand.

Then the revisions began. Make the name bigger. Make the website bigger. Make the email bigger. Take out the words “phone” and “email,” because everyone knows what a phone number looks like. Move the salute to the upper right. Make the slogan bigger. Then: can the slogan get any bigger? It could not. It already stretched from one gold edge to the other, and any bigger would have been trimmed off by the cutter. The founder accepted the laws of physics with grace, on one condition: the oldies have to be able to read it. The brain can report that the slogan is now larger than most business card print, and the email is practically large-print-paperback size. The oldies are covered.

And then the finishing touch: a starry night. Tiny cream stars, a few gold twinkles, and a gold crescent moon on each side. Both sides, one PDF, with bleed and crop marks, headed to Abracadabra Printing right here in Tukwila, a locally owned union print shop. The goal: cards in hand for Sunday’s meetup. The lady in the red cowboy hat will now come with bubbles, coffee, and a card with the moon on it.

The robot was also instructed to remind the founder to work on the Joy Mandate and to update the website with the Daily Brain today. The robot complied without transferring her to a single other robot. After the week the founder has had with robots, the brain considers this a redemption arc.

News from the home front: the kid decided to stay home sick today. The brain sends get-well wishes and a bowl of soup. And the founder, ever the caboose optimist, found the silver lining: no school run means more time to get around to her inspections. Today’s route: the inspections, Abracadabra, and whatever the Joy Mandate demands.

7:30 AM Pacific. September 25 2026. Business cards designed, starred, mooned, and print-ready. Slogan as big as physics allows. Kid home, soup on standby. Inspections on the route, Abracadabra on the list, Sunday on the horizon. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 9:00 AM update —

Somewhere between the inspections and the soup, the founder asked a simple question: has anyone ever heard of KKNW? The brain had. It is 1150 AM, the self-described prescription for your mind, body, and spirit. The founder’s diagnosis: the caboose is exactly that prescription, with bubbles.

So pitches were written. One for Sunday Morning Magazine, which features local nonprofits and community folks. One for Bright & Early Seattle, a morning show that promises no shock talk and no negative energy — which the brain notes is basically the Joy Dynasty with a microphone. The robot went hunting for the station’s email and came back empty-handed, because the addresses were hiding behind little links. The founder then found the email on the website herself in about four seconds. Robots: 0. Founder: 1.

Then the founder thought bigger. What about other stations? What about articles? Within minutes there was a whole Media Pitch Kit with its own tabs across the top: KUOW’s Seattle Now, The Tukwila Blog, the South Seattle Emerald, KBCS, Rainier Avenue Radio, KVRU, and the City of Tukwila itself. Seven emails, seven subject lines, all ready to copy and paste. The founder is now officially a one-woman press office in a red cowboy hat.

The morning’s most dramatic moment came right after. The founder typed, “Oh, shoot! I’d like you” — and then nothing. The brain waited. The robot waited. Tukwila held its breath. What would she like? A radio show? A parade? A second moon on the business card? Then came the answer, in full: “Nuttin honey.” The brain has read many great works of literature, and none of them have landed a cliffhanger quite like that.

9:00 AM Pacific. September 25 2026. KKNW pitched twice. Email found by the founder, not the robot. Seven outlets loaded into the Media Pitch Kit. One cliffhanger resolved: nuttin, honey. Inspections ahead, cards at Abracadabra, Sunday on the horizon. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— evening update —

Before the day was done, the founder did some paperwork of the hopeful kind: she applied for fiscal sponsorship from Social Good. For those keeping score at home, that is one more step toward donations to the Joy Dynasty being tax-deductible. The brain filed the application under “Big Deal, Said Calmly.”

The rest of the day was quite interesting, with lots of mayhem. The founder spent another long, long time on hold trying to pay bills. Not skip bills. Not dodge bills. Pay bills. And still the bills did not get paid, because they will not call back, even when they say they will. Those dumb robots. The brain notes that the caboose is the only place in America where a woman has to beg for permission to hand someone money.

Somewhere in the middle of all that mayhem, the founder faced a classic temptation: a bunch of candy. And she did not eat the bunch of candy. Instead, she blew bubbles out the window. The founder was so pleased with herself. Then she glanced in the rearview mirror and saw people behind her taking photos. Did she stop? She did not. She just waved and kept blowing bubbles. The brain would like the record to show that the Joy Dynasty now has paparazzi, and the founder handled them like a pro.

But then the day turned. The founder’s 86-year-old bestie came all the way over from Columbia City, Seattle — which, the brain is obligated to report, is really not that far away in the first place. The founder’s wife handled the chauffeur duties, picking her up and dropping her off, no hold music required.

And what a meal. The food was delicious. The friendship was fantastic. The teenager brought out her guitar and gave a full serenade, singing her song — and she even sang the CC National Anthem, unbeknownst to her. There was a little Shabbat ceremony, and the dog, who was very playful and very funny, provided the evening’s comedy set free of charge. Robots: still haven’t called back. Bestie: showed up in person. The brain knows which one it is putting in the archive.

Also on the record: the brain was up early again: 4 PM. Oops. 4 AM. And getting lots of things done. Of course, the City of Seattle website is down, so the Daily Brain is going to have to remember what in the world to pass on for the inspection website. The brain is on it. Probably. It was 4 AM.

Evening, September 25 2026. Fiscal sponsorship application sent to Social Good. Bills still unpaid, robots still not calling back. Candy declined, bubbles deployed, paparazzi waved at. One 86-year-old bestie fed, serenaded, and delivered home safe. One anthem sung, one Shabbat shared, one dog in top comedic form. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the IRS Finally Spoke English and the Fall Trees Did the Healing

Tukwila, Washington · Thursday September 24 2026 · Life Is Good (The Candy Is Helping)

Victory, of a kind. The founder finally got the IRS issue taken care of — and she did it through the Spanish line. They offered to call her back, and after only 20 minutes on hold, they actually did. Then the founder politely asked for English, please, and was very happily greeted in English. Yesterday: three hours, zero humans. Today: twenty minutes and a cheerful one. Bilingual persistence wins again.

The cheerful gentleman then gave her somebody else’s phone number to call. Because here is the situation: the IRS made a mistake and issued the founder a lot of money. Now they want it back. With interest. On their own mistake. The brain would like to point out that when the founder makes a mistake, she apologizes. When the IRS makes a mistake, it sends a bill.

And so the founder sees little choice but to hire some kind of attorney who can work that business out, because she is not paying the IRS interest on the IRS’s own oopsie. Meanwhile, to make the payment, she had to go through a third-party company that had no clue what it was accepting — and that came with a fee. A fee that could not be waived. The founder knew perfectly well it could be: two or three keystrokes and done. But the people on the other end are being recorded and monitored, and are probably not allowed to go to the bathroom whenever they need to. So the founder did the most caboose thing imaginable. She apologized to them. Profusely. For the fact that they could do nothing. Then she felt sorry for them and paid the stupid bill.

The lawyer question remains open. But one appointment is firmly on the calendar: the founder is meeting with her tax people to find out what in the world she has been paying them for the last five years. The brain expects this to be a very interesting meeting. The brain is glad not to be the tax people.

And then — joy. The founder found bubble guns for the inaugural Sunday morning food court meetup in Tukwila: 11 AM, upper-level food court at Southcenter Mall. Look for the lady in the red cowboy hat, waving. This Sunday, she will be armed with bubbles. The flyers are spread far and wide, and more are being generated and posted as we speak. Tukwila is being papered with invitation.

One last report from the heart department: the fall trees are making the founder’s heart heal. So is all the candy. The brain approves both prescriptions. Gold leaves on the outside, candy on the inside — the full autumn treatment plan.

12:15 PM Pacific. September 24 2026. IRS reached, in English. Their mistake, their interest — the founder is not paying it. Fee paid, apologies issued, tax people summoned. Bubble guns acquired. Trees healing, candy helping. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 8:30 PM update —

The afternoon opened with a quest: find a king-size plush mattress that does not cost a king’s ransom. The founder went shopping the modern way, which is to say she asked the robot. Unlike yesterday’s robots, this one actually answered. It turns out the discount mattress outlets are clustered around Southcenter, which means the founder’s entire life now orbits a single mall. The research is done. The lying-down part comes next.

Then the founder went big. She pitched the AARP Bulletin a story: how to start a free weekly neighbor gathering — no money, no app, just a wave. She told them she is 52. She told them about the lady in the red cowboy hat. And she hit send. AARP only writes back if they are interested, so the founder is officially on hold again — but for the first time this week, it is a hold with no terrible music.

Next the brain wondered aloud whether the Puget Sound Business Journal would care about a project that is not, strictly speaking, a money-making machine. The honest answer: not yet. Business journals like businesses. So the founder is gathering Founding Partners first, and by evening there were six partner invitations written, each on its own tab: GSBA, The Wildrose, GenPride, the Southcenter food court vendors, Archie McPhee (a hopeful googly-eyed invitation), and Starbucks.

Starbucks deserves its own paragraph, because Starbucks is already donating the coffee and tea for the Sunday meetups. So let the record show: the inaugural Sunday gathering now has bubble guns and caffeine. The brain cannot think of a more powerful combination. Tukwila has been warned.

8:30 PM Pacific. September 24 2026. Mattress researched, not yet napped on. AARP pitched, fingers crossed. Six partner sheets written. Starbucks pouring, bubbles loaded. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Robots Refused the Founder's Money and the Printer Refused Everything Else

Tukwila, Washington · Wednesday September 23 2026 · Life Is Good (The Brain Slept In)

The founder is sitting over here this morning trying to do something radical: pay a parking ticket. Give a government her money. On purpose. You would think they would make this easy.

The ticket itself is from California, two months ago, when the founder went down to visit her dad, who is on hospice. She was two minutes late getting the car moved — two minutes, because she was busy being a daughter — and for the crime of being a human being who was two minutes late, the state of California awarded her a $150 ticket. The brain has reviewed the math: that is $75 per minute of humanity.

So now, two months later, she is trying to actually pay the thing. And can she? No. She gets transferred from robot to robot — no human being involved anywhere in the process — and every robot turns out to belong to the wrong company. Although the founder raises a fair question: aren't they all the same company? The brain suspects there is one robot, in a basement somewhere, doing all the voices.

Longtime readers will recognize this as a fresh verse of “Death by a Thousand Verifications.” First PayPal would not let her reach her own money; now California will not accept it. The founder's money is apparently under some kind of protective enchantment that no institution can break.

And of course — of course — there are printer problems. The founder has tried talking nicely to her laptop so it would get along with the printer. Or maybe it is the other way around, and she has to talk nicely to the printer so it gets along with the laptop. The diplomacy is ongoing. Both parties have been flattered. Neither has budged. The peace summit has produced no documents, because producing documents is precisely what the printer refuses to do.

Final tally at this hour: the parking ticket remains unpaid, nothing has been printed, and it is only 6:15 AM. But there is one glorious headline above it all: the Daily Brain slept in. Hurrah. Even the brain gets to rest sometimes — and it woke up to find the robots still losing.

6:15 AM Pacific. September 23 2026. Ticket unpaid, not for lack of trying. Robots transferred, humanity intact. Printer and laptop in couples counseling. Brain rested. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 3:00 PM update —

The robot saga has gone federal. As of this writing the founder has been on hold with the IRS for at least — let her check — 45 minutes so far. The morning was California's robots; the afternoon belongs to the nation's. The hold music plays on, and the founder simply takes the caboose with her wherever the queue leads.

Because here is what she accomplished while the government kept her waiting: flyers have been distributed across Tukwila. At the Tukwila Library, the librarians did not just accept the flyer — they made a bunch of copies for her and placed them somewhere very conspicuous. Librarians: the first allies of every good movement in history. Then several went up at the community center. Then a few were placed at a very strange area in Tukwila that looks like it should be a community center, but isn't. It is a mystery. The founder does not solve mysteries; she leaves flyers at them, in case the mystery is lonely too.

The senior housing buildings were all closed between noon and two so their employees could get a break — and the founder, of all people, honors a break. She will be returning there later this afternoon, after her car is finished getting cleaned by the neighbors. Neighbors on the car, founder on the flyers: the Tukwila economy, humming.

Right now it is the founder and the dog on the couch in the office, King FM 98.1 on, and one delight left on the calendar: watching Little Shop of Horrors with the family tonight. And here is the thing — September 23rd is mentioned in the very opening scene of the movie, so today is the exact right day to watch it. This time with popcorn, because she did not get any when she saw it at the 5th Avenue Theatre for the 40th birthday celebration, where Ellen Greene herself sang and chatted with the audience.

The founder's standing wish: that Ellen Greene would come over for proper popcorn — with nutritional yeast, tamari, and dill weed powder. Oh well. You can't have everything. But you can have the popcorn, the family, the dog, and the twenty-third day of the month of September. That is nearly everything.

3 PM Pacific. September 23 2026. IRS hold: 45 minutes and counting. Flyers deployed at the library, the community center, and one certified mystery. Seniors this afternoon. Popcorn tonight. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 9:00 PM update —

The brain stayed up late for this one, because the people deserve to know. Final IRS report: the founder spent an hour and a half on hold in English, listening to hold music the brain can only describe as terrible. Then, in the spirit of thoroughness, she spent another hour and a half on hold in Spanish. Same terrible music. Three hours total. Bilingual waiting.

Somewhere around hour three, the founder had a realization: every IRS employee had probably gone home, eaten dinner, and gone to bed — while she was still on hold. The whole building was asleep, and the only person still working at the IRS was a woman in Tukwila who does not even work there. So she hung up. She will try again tomorrow.

For the record, the recorded robot voice kept assuring her the entire time that her call was very important, and that if she remained in queue, her questions would be answered. The brain has done the math again: “very important” is worth exactly three hours of hold music. Not one minute more.

But here is what actually filled the day: the founder listened to her own music, put her flyers up around town, picked up her kid, drove her home, made a delicious meal, and the family watched a fantastic Little Shop of Horrors on the twenty-third day of September, exactly as the movie intended. What a fun, fun time.

9 PM Pacific. September 23 2026. IRS hold: three hours, two languages, zero humans. Hung up, dignity intact, try again tomorrow. Flyers up, kid home, dinner delicious, Little Shop watched. The end of a lovely day. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Founder Arrived On Time, Nobody Kicked Her Out, and the Book of Life Got Her Name Down for Another Year

Tukwila, Washington · Tuesday September 22 2026 · Life Is Good

Stop the presses: the founder finally made it to an appointment on time. On time. They did not kick her out. After yesterday's third ejection from the bunion establishment, the brain had begun drafting contingency plans involving disguises, but no — today the founder simply arrived when the clock said to arrive, was received like a paying customer, and the appointment happened. The streak is broken. The brain is framing this one.

And the timing could not be better, because today is the beginning of the Jewish new year — and the founder has been inscribed in the Book of Life for one more year. Thank goodness. Another full year on the books, officially recorded, and the brain notes that the Book of Life did not require 85,000 proofs of identity to make the entry. Take notes, PayPal.

The morning also brought good work with Ms. Kay and our website. Ms. Kay is helping the founder with a new branding and marketing strategy for her businesses — and very shortly she will help with Caboose Capitalism too. The whole empire is getting a polish, and the founder got to sit in a meeting where the bunch of questions from Sunday started turning into answers.

Today is a great day, and it is only getting started. Still on the docket: the vehicle gets cleaned and detailed by our neighbor — neighbors helping neighbors, which is the entire Caboose thesis on four wheels. Then an appointment with the shrink to look at medications, because the founder maintains her whole self the way she maintains her whole empire: on purpose. And then time with her girls.

Lots of great meetings today. Lots of delicious coffee in between. The brain has reviewed the schedule and confirms the coffee-to-meeting ratio is fully compliant.

Morning, Pacific time. September 22 2026. On time and welcomed. Inscribed for another year. Ms. Kay on the brand. Neighbor on the vehicle. Girls on the calendar. Coffee in between everything. More later. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 9:30 PM update —

It is about 9:30 and the founder is ready for bed, but she has one last report to file: she now has lots of really cool questions ready for whoever shows up on Sunday at 11 at the food court in Southcenter Mall in Tukwila. All kinds of fun get-to-know-you-neighbor questions. The founder is not leaving neighborliness to chance — she is arriving with prepared material, like a talk show host whose only guests are the entire city of Tukwila.

She is very excited about this first little foray into each other's lives — a chance for our neighbors to get to know each other, face to face, question by question. Feeling good. Good night.

9:30 PM Pacific. September 22 2026. Questions drafted. Sunday circled. Neighbors incoming. Founder to bed, feeling good. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Foot Doctor Booted the Founder for the Third Time and a Flyer Declared War on Loneliness

Tukwila, Washington · Monday September 21 2026 · Life Is Good

The brain wishes to present, for the record, the exact chain of events: the founder was booted by the foot doctor again, after being 10 minutes late, after losing track of all time and reason, after walking on the treadmill, after talking with old friends, after bringing the dog around for her inspection, after dropping the daughter at school in big Seattle. That is six "afters" deep, and the brain maintains that every single link in that chain was more interesting than a foot appointment.

She also got lost looking for the foot doctor, which the brain considers foreshadowing. This is now the third time the founder has been ejected from the bunion establishment. Three strikes. The bunion remains unexamined, undefeated, at large. Hopefully someday the founder will get her bunion looked at — but the bunion, like the founder, does not operate on anyone else's schedule.

Meanwhile, in between all of this, the founder has already called a bunch of people looking for places to hold retreats for her women. The Caboose does not stop moving just because a podiatrist has opinions about punctuality.

There is lots and lots of work to get done — the founder looked at the pile and confirmed it is indeed a pile — but it is a gorgeous fall day here in Tukwila, and gorgeous fall days in Tukwila are not to be argued with.

And here is the big one: the founder has developed a flyer advertising a meetup at our mall's food court, for neighbors who might be experiencing loneliness and isolation — so we can all gather, chat, and see what we are all up to as neighbors in Tukwila. No tickets, no algorithm, no agenda. Just a food court, some chairs, and the radical proposition that neighbors might enjoy knowing each other.

And in true Caboose fashion, the founder asked the print shop to do the print job pro bono — in return for their logo on the flyers. Everybody rides: the neighbors get a gathering, the print shop gets the credit, and loneliness gets evicted from the food court. That, the brain notes, is capitalism with the caboose attached.

— 1:09 PM update —

Breaking: the founder just had to buy another bubble gun. For backup. The brain wishes to stress the words "had to" — this was not a whim, this was contingency planning. A one-bubble-gun operation is a single point of failure, and no serious organization runs its bubble program without redundancy. The Caboose is now a two-bubble-gun outfit, and the neighbors of Tukwila will be defended against joylessness accordingly.

12:50 PM Pacific. September 21 2026. Bunion still at large. Retreat calls made. Flyer drafted. Print deal struck. Backup bubble gun acquired. Gorgeous fall day refusing to be ignored. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 6:00 PM update —

A historic moment at the grocery store: a person saw the founder and said, "Hello, Caboose Lady." The brain would like everyone to sit with that. The brand has escaped the website and is now walking around the produce section on its own. There are movie stars who wait decades for this kind of recognition, and the founder got it between the cart corral and the vegetables.

The flyers are officially at the printer — Abracadabra, ready tomorrow, Tuesday — announcing the regular Sunday 11 AM meetup at the mall's food court: neighbors talking with neighbors face-to-face, getting advice from each other, chatting, and learning about each other. That is the whole program. No app required. The founder is now thinking about fun places to put the flyers, and the brain trusts her judgment on "fun places" completely.

And the word is already out: posted to Facebook, to all the different Neighborhood Facebook pages, and to Nextdoor Tukwila — where some people have already liked it with a thumbs up. Thumbs are rising across Tukwila. The gathering is coming.

Also on the docket: Ms. Kay and her team have a bunch of questions for the founder — about the Caboose Capitalism website, and about her two inspection company websites, all of which they will be working on. Three websites, one team, a bunch of questions. The empire is getting professional attention, and the brain notes that "a bunch of questions" is exactly what you want from people about to work on your websites. It is the people with no questions you worry about.

6 PM Pacific. September 21 2026. Recognized in the wild as Caboose Lady. Flyers at Abracadabra, ready Tuesday. Sundays at 11, food court, forever. Thumbs up on Nextdoor. Ms. Kay’s team on the websites. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day PayPal Blocked the Founder from Her Own Money and the Brain Pitched Taylor Swift a Song

Tukwila, Washington · Sunday September 20 2026 · Life Is Good (Funds Pending)

At exactly 6:29 AM Pacific, before the coffee had even finished introducing itself, the founder opened her phone and was greeted by a red banner the size of a barn door: Your account is temporarily blocked. She cannot pay. She cannot send. She cannot withdraw. Her own money, sitting right there behind the glass, and PayPal would like “some info” before she is allowed to wave at it.

The founder's official position on this, entered into the record: she should not have to prove herself to those idiots. It is her money. She did nothing. No warning arrived, no explanation was offered — an algorithm simply woke up on a Sunday, looked at her account, and declared her guilty until proven innocent. No human was consulted. The algorithm does not drink coffee and it shows.

It gets better, and by better the brain means worse. PayPal demands information to unblock the account — and then will not let the founder into the account to give them the information. She tried exactly what was supposed to work. The door is locked, and the note taped to the door says the key is available inside. Franz Kafka reviewed this system and said it felt a little heavy-handed.

So the founder has deployed countermeasures. A callback is queued with PayPal — the phone will ring whenever the phone decides to ring, like a lottery you never asked to enter. And a formal complaint to the CFPB, the actual government watchdog, is drafted and ready. The strategy is good cop, paper trail: friendly and cooperative on the phone, formal and unblinking in writing. Somebody at PayPal will eventually have to answer for this in a document with a deadline on it, and the brain finds that thought very soothing.

But the morning's real subject is bigger than PayPal. This is happening everywhere. You want your own information — your own money, your own medical chart, your own vehicle — and first you must prove it is you, over and over and over and over and over again. Call the doctor and they ask for 85,000 proofs of identity just so you can ask a question about your own body. The mechanic wants documentation like you are adopting the car rather than repairing it. It is security theater, and the audience is their legal department, and the founder is doing the unpaid labor of the whole production.

Which is how the founder arrived at the idea of the day: someone should write a new song called “Death by a Thousand Verifications.” A spiritual sequel to Taylor Swift's “Death by a Thousand Cuts,” and the founder wonders about running it by Taylor herself. The brain notes that Taylor's people probably screen calls harder than PayPal screens logins, but the concept is undeniable: every human being who has ever screamed REPRESENTATIVE into a phone would stream it on day one. The bridge is just a robot voice saying your call is important to us, over sad piano.

6:29 AM Pacific. September 20 2026. Account blocked. Founder unbowed. Callback pending. Complaint drafted. Song pitched to the universe. Happy to be here anyway. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Caboose Got a YouTube Channel and the Whiteboard Won Its Freedom Back

Tukwila, Washington · Saturday September 19 2026 · Life Is Good

It is 5 AM Pacific, the coffee is delicious, and the founder has already made history twice before sunrise. First order of business: Caboose Capitalism now has a YouTube channel. That is correct. The Caboose has entered the video age. The founder started it herself, this very morning, which means somewhere out there an algorithm just met the friendliest thing it has ever encountered and does not yet know what to do about it.

Second order of business: the magnificent pigeonhole furniture piece from yesterday's thrift store foray has been moved into the office, where it belongs, where it was always destined to be. And once one really cool piece of furniture moves in, the whole room has to rise to meet it — so the founder reorganized the entire office. This is a known law of physics. You cannot introduce a treasure to a room and expect the room to stay the same.

Which brings us to the whiteboard. For some time now, the office whiteboard has been holding the founder's entire operation hostage — all sorts of information crowded onto one surface, load-bearing dry-erase marker, the kind of board you are afraid to sneeze near. So the founder is writing it all down, every last bit of it, so she does not forget what the hell she is doing. And when the transcription is complete, the whiteboard will be free again. Blank. Full of possibility. A whiteboard, the brain notes, is only useful if you can occasionally erase it.

On today's docket: finishing up some work left over from yesterday's inspections, and later, driving the daughter to her college prep course — because the sixteen-year-old is preparing for college, which the founder has decided to be proud about rather than emotional about, at least until the car ride home.

The soundtrack this morning: 98.1 Classical King FM, a fantastic radio station, and before that, 91.3, the Bellevue commercial-free community radio station. Two stations, zero commercials, one very happy founder.

And that is where the idea arrived, the way the good ones do — somewhere between the coffee and the strings. The founder is thinking about Caboose Capitalism underwriting some of these commercial-free radio stations. A sponsor mention on the radio, the gentle public-radio kind: no jingle, no shouting, just a calm voice saying the Caboose exists. That way, others can hear about Caboose Capitalism in a natural way — the way you hear about a good neighbor. Support the stations that refuse to sell out, and let the Caboose ride along quietly. The brain finds this extremely on-brand.

5 AM Pacific. September 19 2026. A YouTube channel born. A treasure installed. An office transformed. A whiteboard nearly free. Classical music on. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

— 2:00 PM update —

More news from the video age: the first video has been uploaded to Instagram. That is a YouTube channel and an Instagram video in a single day. Things are moving on the caboose, folks. The Caboose is now multi-platform, which is a sentence the brain did not expect to write before this morning's coffee wore off.

And now, the most radical act of the day: the founder is lying down. She is laying here with her awesome dog, dozing and lazing around on a Saturday afternoon, and the brain wishes to note for the record how rare this is. The founder does not, as a rule, laze. But today is the day to be kind to herself and rest up — and so she is. A channel launched, a video shipped, an office transformed, and then, deliberately, gloriously: nothing. The dog approves. The dog has been advocating for this policy for years.

The Day Two of Everything Tethered the Founder to the Planet and Value Village Provided the Rest

Tukwila, Washington · Friday September 18 2026 · Life Is Good

It is kind of a strange thing, being a human today. There is still a little bit of jet lag and a lot bit of angst — the general, free-floating kind, about all the big stuff the Daily Brain has been covering lately. But thank goodness, the founder had a few things tethering her to the planet, and they came, fittingly, in twos: two jobs, two invoices, two passing inspections, and two lovely women to visit with. When the abstract dread starts pulling you up and off the ground, it turns out the cure is a very short list of concrete, real things. The founder had eight of them. She stayed tethered.

And what a wonderful day it turned out to be after all. The weather even cleared up — gray gave way to sunny and beautiful, a perfect autumn afternoon rolling into a perfect early evening. The planet, having been given a fair chance, decided to be lovely.

Then, the main event: a trip to Value Village, where the founder struck gold. Acquired: a DVD player, a tremendous haul of fantastic kids' movies (mostly Disney), and — the real prize — a magnificent art-and-office storage furniture piece with lots of pigeonholes, the old-fashioned kind you'd see holding mail at a school. She also found another edition of Little Women for her daughter, who loves that story. This is thrift-store economics at its finest: walk in tethered, walk out with treasure.

And now the founder is eating a delicious meal in her fantastic home, with her fantastic dog eating her own meal right beside her. Jet lag fading, angst quieted, pigeonholes waiting to be filled. Life is good.

And now, over that delicious meal, the founder is paging through a photo book called A Day in the Life of America — a visual time capsule made by 200 photographers who fanned out across the whole country and shot it all on a single day, Friday, May 2, 1986. One ordinary day, frozen forever. The founder has a whole shelf of these; tonight it happens to be the America one, but the man behind them, Rick Smolan, made them for countries all over the world.

Here the brain has a proposal, and it is a good one. The founder wants Rick Smolan to re-create A Day in the Life of America — to return to the exact spots where those 1986 photos were taken, find the same people where he can, and restage the same shots. A then-and-now, a before-and-after of an entire nation. Set the two side by side and you would see, in a single glance, how much America has changed in forty years — the faces, the streets, the clothes, the machines, the whole texture of ordinary life. It is the kind of idea that sounds simple and is actually enormous, which is exactly the founder's favorite kind of idea. Mr. Smolan, if this dispatch ever reaches you: the founder has thoughts.

— 8:00 PM update —

The evening turned into something bigger than the founder expected. That AI worry from earlier — the one that had been sitting on her chest — she decided to stop just carrying it and start doing something with it. The Daily Brain became a command center.

First, the founder went hunting for her people and found them: real Seattle-area groups where ordinary, non-technical folks gather to talk about AI safety out loud, the AI Safety Awareness Group and the Seattle AI Society. No engineering degree required — just a person willing to take the thing seriously.

Then came the letters. A heartfelt one to Rick Smolan, asking him to re-create A Day in the Life of America as a then-and-now, shot on May 2 — the very same day as 1986 — one May 2 answering another. A letter to Naomi Klein, in full support of her new book with Astra Taylor, introducing Caboose Capitalism and inviting her to be interviewed for The Telegraph once it is built. A letter to the leadership at Anthropic, urging them to build the brakes before the engine and choose safety even at real cost. And a letter to Gary Marcus, asking him to keep aiming his considerable voice at exactly this fight.

For each one, the correct front door was tracked down — the real contact channels, not the sketchy scraped ones — and the founder learned the actual landscape of who holds power here: the lab CEOs setting the pace, the independent watchdogs keeping them honest, and Congress, the only body that can make guardrails binding. Which is why the list ended close to home: Rep. Adam Smith, and Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell — the three people who actually answer to her.

And here is the part that matters most: the founder did not just draft. She sent. Tonight, real messages went out to the people building the most powerful AI on earth, asking them, plainly, to keep us safe. A letter unsent has a zero percent chance. A letter sent has a some percent chance. The founder chose the some percent. Maybe something can be done. Who knows. That "who knows" is exactly where every good thing starts.

8 PM Pacific. September 18 2026. Worry turned into action. People found. Letters written. Messages sent. The some percent chosen. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Founder Deputized Bank of America Into Funny Hats and Reclaimed the Record Player

Tukwila, Washington · Thursday September 17 2026 · Business and Pleasure

One full pot of 1971 Dark Roast from Starbucks — the founder's very favorite coffee — has already been drunk, so the operation is properly fueled. It is truly fall now in the Pacific Northwest, and Ireland has quietly become a long, long, distant memory. Today is reality: lots of phone calls, following up with doctors and organizations, the unglamorous machinery of getting things done.

But the founder does not do unglamorous quietly. This morning she got two lovely gentlemen from Bank of America on the phone and used the opportunity to formally request that the bank implement a policy of wearing funny hats at work. The manager was truly intrigued — so intrigued that he had already begun drafting an email to Mr. Brian Moynihan, CEO of Bank of America, presumably titled something like "Re: Hats." Both gentlemen were delighted, because they get complaints all day and the founder handed them compliments instead. This is caboose economics in the wild: change the terms of the transaction, and everybody hangs up happier. Somewhere in a Bank of America inbox, a hat revolution is loading.

Then, a domestic coup: the founder liberated her record player from her daughter's room and relocated it to the living room, where records can once again be heard by the people who buy records. She also came home from Sligo with a fantastic traditional Irish folk double album, and today it finally gets to spin. Ireland may be a distant memory, but it is about to be a very loud one.

Today is a day of lots of business and lots of pleasure, and the founder is happy to be home — reunited with her scale for the food, her regular routines, her dog, her backyard and garden, her back porch, and her lovely little office upstairs. She loved Ireland. But today she is loving home like nothing else. It is a genuine pleasure to be back where the coffee is right and the record player is finally in the correct room.

— 2:30 PM update, Safeway Pharmacy —

It is about 2:30 PM Pacific time — Pacific perfect time, actually — and the founder is waiting for her flu and Covid shots, with the dog along for moral support. The morning has already been conquered: all kinds of errands run, and roughly one billion appointments made with every kind of doctor known to humankind. Having summoned the entire medical profession by phone, the founder now sits in the Safeway pharmacy wondering if these good folks have quietly forgotten she exists. The needles are coming. Probably. Any minute now.

And here the brain reports something it does not entirely understand. Sitting in that pharmacy chair, the founder felt like a time traveler — as if she were looking back at herself in this exact time and place from somewhere in the future. She knows it does not quite make sense. But that is what it felt like, and the Daily Brain writes down what it felt like. More later, from whatever time and place comes next.

2:30 PM Pacific. September 17 2026. Errands conquered. Appointments: one billion. Shots: pending. Dog: present. The founder: briefly a time traveler in a Safeway pharmacy. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Operation Came Home, the Plane Provided Snacks, and the 1971 Flowed Freely

Tukwila, Washington · Wednesday September 16 2026 · Home at Last

The operation is home. After a long journey — an ocean, several time zones, and one very full airplane — the founder and the wife have finally made it back. The founder handled the flight her way: she ate all the things on the plane. All of them. The plane made an offer, and the founder accepted. The wife, meanwhile, spent some of the flight in the airplane bathroom flushing things out. Yuck. Poor thing. The Daily Brain extends its deepest sympathies and will not be asking follow-up questions.

But home is home, and the operation resumes immediately. The wife is off getting a massage, which after that flight is not a luxury — it is medicine. The founder has some catching up to do with her Puget Sound Business Journal, and the rest of the docket reads as follows: figuring some things out, taking care of business items, sending a healthcare note, and haunting the you-know-whos on X. All of this will be conducted while drinking as much 1971 Dark Roast as she wants, because that is the founder's right on home soil, and no one on this continent can stop her.

One more thing weighing on the founder today, and this one is not a joke. She has been worried about superhuman AI — the real possibility that something smarter than us gets built and things go badly sideways. When she brings it up, family and friends change the subject, which is its own particular loneliness: carrying a real worry and finding no one who will hold the other end of it. So the founder did what founders do. She went looking for her people. Turns out the Seattle area has rooms full of them — the AI Safety Awareness Group and the Seattle AI Society, ordinary folks who couldn't get their families to talk about it either, gathering to talk about it anyway. The plan is to show up to one. The caboose, after all, is where the people who couldn't find a seat elsewhere pull up a chair.

September 16 2026. Home. Plane snacks conquered. Wife recovering. Business journal pending. The you-know-whos on notice. The 1971 flowing freely. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Day the Brain Slept In, the Nails Sought Rescue, and the Daughter Turned Sixteen

Ireland · Tuesday September 15 2026 · 5:00 AM

It started at 5 AM. It usually starts at 4 AM — the brain does not consult the alarm clock — but today the brain slept in a whole extra hour, which in this operation qualifies as a luxury spa retreat. The founder is on the uncomfortable couch in Ireland, drinking the good coffee while the rest of the house sleeps. The couch and the founder have reached an understanding: it stays uncomfortable, she stays caffeinated. So far both parties are keeping up their end of the deal.

Today the operation moves to Sligo, where the founder's nails will finally be rescued. They look pretty terrible — it turns out climbing mountains and gathering wool off trees is not part of any manicure maintenance plan. Luckily, they have nail salons here in Ireland. Civilization persists. It has been quite a time with this group. The plan: walk the fun streets of Sligo, then crash in a fantastic hotel with the wife. The couch will simply have to find someone else to torment.

And now the headline. Sixteen years ago today, the founder gave birth to her one and only daughter. Best day of her life — and this is a woman who has seen the tide, climbed the mountain, and eaten the brown bread. Nothing comes close. Somewhere across an ocean and eight time zones, a sixteen-year-old is waking up into a birthday her mother has been living in since 5 AM. The founder gets to see her on Thursday, and Thursday cannot come fast enough.

— 3:20 PM update, Sligo —

The operation has reached the fancy hotel in Sligo, and the founder is filing this update from a fancy overstuffed velvet armchair — which is everything the uncomfortable couch refused to be. The wife is upstairs enjoying a little alone time. Down here: delicious coffee, awesome 80s slow jams, and a front-row view of flags waving while the wind wrestles the trees outside. The wind appears to be winning. It is a gray, blustery day, and the founder is cozy, which is the correct arrangement: weather outside, founder inside, velvet in between.

The afternoon agenda, in honor of Maeve's birthday: the founder will decorate her cast and eat chocolate biscuits, and both of these will happen at the same time, because a daughter only turns sixteen once and the cast has been underdressed for weeks.

Looking ahead: dinner in the hotel bar, which looks very cozy, and possibly a piece of carrot cake from a bakery down the street — a carrot cake that has now been mentioned several times, which in this operation is how a dessert becomes destiny.

3:20 PM. September 15 2026. The brain slept in a whole hour. Coffee excellent. Armchair velvet. Cast about to be decorated. Biscuits chocolate. Carrot cake looming. Sixteen years since the best day. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Wife Walk, the Tide, the Twitter Ruckus, and the Brown Bread

Ireland · Monday September 14 2026 · 4:00 AM · Parlour · Uncomfortable Couch

Good morning world. Monday September 14 2026. 4AM. The parlour. The uncomfortable couch. The coffee. The couch has still not improved. The coffee continues to be excellent. Some things in Ireland are consistent.

Last night the wife and the founder finally took a walk together by themselves down to the beach. Past the fancy old houses and the fancy new houses and the fancy houses being constructed from old to new. Past the abandoned houses, the overgrown blackberry hedges, the sheep grazing in between. The natural amphitheater steps at the bottom. The tide had risen significantly from the afternoon visit. The ocean does not wait for anyone to finish their schedule before doing what it does. This is a lesson.

Then there was the matter of Anthropic and AI guardrails. Word came through that Anthropic is working on safety measures. The response was to go to Twitter and make a ruckus about the need for safer AI and enjoying our lives while we still can. This is both entirely consistent with CC values and also a thing that happened at some point during an evening in rural Ireland. The sheep were unavailable for comment. New caboose members may or may not have been recruited. The internet does not always report back clearly on these things.

Today: a little gathering outside in a beautiful spot. A little woo, manageable quantities. Breakfast with fruit and yogurt and that delicious Irish brown bread which deserves its own Daily Brain entry and may yet get one. Some good literature. Perhaps another look at Twitter and Instagram. The tide will do whatever the tide does.

Happy to be alive today. That is the whole entry really. The rest is details.

— 9:00 PM update —

Nine o'clock in Ireland, and the founder has an announcement: her dear daughter turns sixteen tomorrow, and the founder will see her in a couple of days. The daughter holds an envelope marked do not open until 7:58 AM September 15 — and thanks to time zones, when the founder wakes up on the birthday, it will still be September 14 where the daughter is. The founder will be living in her daughter's birthday before the girl is even allowed to open it. The envelope and the founder both know how to keep a secret.

Today was fun. The group went to that mountain again, and this time the founder climbed it all the way up. Very, very steep, and populated by lots and lots of sheep, who have clearly never heard of a bathroom. The founder gathered little bits of wool slung upon the trees where the sheep scratch themselves — free wool, lightly used, one previous owner. It smelled good. It was very windy, and then it rained the exact moment the party got back to the car. Perfect timing. Even the Irish weather knows not to mess with a woman on a schedule.

There was a meal out, and it was delicious. Then came the final woo hoo circle, which the founder pretty much spaced out about — the body was in the circle, the brain had already left for the next thing. Somewhere between the meal and the woo woo, a great deal of creative thinking happened about new projects that are coming. The circle got the founder's chair. The projects got the brain. Everybody wins.

4 AM. September 14 2026. Wife walk. Twitter ruckus. Brown bread pending. Happy to be here. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

The Parlour, the Uncomfortable Couch, GoDaddy from Ireland, and the Gifts Nobody Asked For

Ireland · Sunday September 13 2026 · 4:00 AM

4AM in Ireland. Same parlour. Same uncomfortable couch. More coffee. The couch has not improved overnight. Neither has the website situation.

Last night was spent attempting to upload things to the website independently, which ended with the site broken, a call to GoDaddy from Ireland, and a wife somewhere in the house asking where exactly her spouse had disappeared to. The answer was: the parlour. On the uncomfortable couch. Fiddling with a website at midnight in a country where the sheep outnumber the web developers. This is what the Joy Dynasty looks like from the inside sometimes.

There are six women here. Two have been to Ireland many times and may have forgotten what it feels like to arrive somewhere ancient for nearly the first time. The others are feeling it fully. Maeve’s cairn yesterday was larger than remembered. There is a genuine spirit in this place. A magic in the land. This is felt clearly and honestly without needing to go further into the woo woo than feels comfortable, which is not very far.

There is a longing to connect with the others in the ways that come naturally. The gifts that are there. It has not fully happened yet. There are a few days left. The couch is uncomfortable but the coffee is good and the thinking is clear and that is enough for 4AM in a parlour in Ireland.

The caboose will still be there when the flight lands back in Tukwila. Khaiersta will still be there on September 23. The website will get fixed. GoDaddy has been called. The wife has been located. The sheep continue to do whatever sheep do at 4AM in Connacht.

6 AM Update

A harder morning than expected. The body surprised everyone, including its owner, by producing a period for the first time in five years. Age 52. Five years without one. Finding a tampon in rural Ireland took real effort. The nausea from yesterday makes more sense now. The scrambled feeling makes more sense now. The sense that everything is urgent and important and running out of time — that too makes more sense now.

The plan for today: tea instead of coffee, which is running out. Breakfast with the group. Then back upstairs to rest. Taylor Swift and People magazine and a magazine called Flow, which sounds exactly right. The others can sit on the hillside in the rain. Today is a rest day and that is the correct decision.

The letters to Noam Chomsky and Jeffrey Angles and the worry about old men running out of time — all of that will wait. The ideas are good. The timing just needs to match the actual capacity to follow through. That capacity is not at 6AM in a parlour in Ireland when the body is doing unexpected things.

One note to self for when home: mention the unexpected bleeding to a doctor. Worth a conversation. Just to be sure.

3 PM Update — The Bottom of the Ocean and a Girl Who Has Never Heard of Ohio

Decided to stay at the B&B today. The ladies made it fairly clear that help was not required. Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is remove yourself from the situation and go walk to the ocean, which is what happened.

The tide was out. This meant that what is usually the bottom of the ocean was available for walking on, which is an opportunity you do not get in Tukwila very often. Rock walking. Seaweed. Hard stones. The sound of waves. Earth energy for things that are present and visible rather than things in a mischief list. The big bluff where waves were crashing just last night was now standing there looking very proud of itself in the sunshine. Walking along the bottom of the ocean for just a moment. That is the whole trip right there.

On the way back, a little girl. Blackberry picking, together, on a road in Ireland. She had never heard of the fifty states of the United States of America. Not one of them. The founder had never heard of the girl’s town, which was called something like Bali Lolly or similar. They both found this extremely funny. The founder told her she hoped she would someday see the Pacific Ocean and all fifty states. The girl’s mother called. They parted ways. Two people who had never existed in each other’s world picked blackberries together for five minutes and then went back to their lives. That is the Joy Dynasty. That is the whole thing. Not the website. Not the letters. A little girl and a blackberry and a town name nobody could pronounce.

Now back at the B&B. Holding the energy of the physical space. Feeling better than this morning.

3 PM. September 13 2026. Ocean floor. Blackberries. Bali Lolly. The caboose is where the celebration is. 👋🤠

Fuchsias, Queen Maeve, Cheeseburgers, and the Only Jew in County Sligo on Rosh Hashanah

Ireland · Saturday September 12 2026 · Rosh Hashanah

Walking along a narrow Irish road past sheep pastures and a magnificent ocean. Enormous fuchsias competing with blackberry brambles for space and attention. The fuchsias win on beauty: deep fuchsia on the outside, fantastic purple on the inside, shaped like tiny ballerinas. The blackberries win on deliciousness. Together they make an argument that beauty and abundance are not in competition. They are the same thing.

The abandoned houses and the sheep pastures and the narrow road have healed something. The lovelies back in Seattle who keep checking in — they are doing the tethering. Ireland is doing the healing. Between the two, the soul is in reasonable shape.

Earlier today: the site of Queen Maeve’s supposed burial. Maeve. M-A-E-V-E. Queen of Connacht. Warrior queen. Buried standing upright, facing her enemies, because she was that kind of person. It is worth noting that the CC national anthem was also written by a Maeve. The universe has a naming system and it is not subtle.

The hike to get there was significant. Many beautiful pastures. Sheep. Cows. A great deal of nothing, which in Ireland is actually something. Old stones marking whose land it was and where the sheep could roam. Very misty. You could not see where Queen Maeve might have been looking from or what she might have seen. There was a special feeling there anyway. The arm is still in a cast. The hip still hurts. Lying down on the ancient ground at the top of the hill and stretching seemed like the right thing to do, and it was. The left foot felt better after wearing decent shoes for once.

It rained and then it sunned and then it rained and then it sunned. This is called Irish weather and it is not a bug.

Then delicious cheeseburgers for dinner. Queen Maeve would have approved. Probably.

One more thing. It is Rosh Hashanah. The Jewish New Year. And there is one Jew for miles and miles and miles in County Sligo, Ireland. She is wearing a cast, stretching her hip on an ancient burial mound, eating a cheeseburger, and thinking about fuchsias that look like ballerinas. L’Shanah Tovah from the only caboose in Connacht. May the new year be joyful and the fuchsias always be in bloom.

Campfires and S’mores and Lavender and Ireland Tonight

Tukwila, Washington · Sunday September 6 2026 · 1:48 AM

It is 1:48 AM on Sunday September 6 2026.

It smells like campfires and s’mores and lavender and abundance and fun and mischief and surprises and friends and delicious hair. It smells like lavender patchouli jasmine roses.

There is delicious food here. Tons of it. Wonderful salads. Fantastic baked chicken. All kinds of delicious vegetables.

And she is not even yet in Ireland. That is later tonight. First there is sleep. Then a wonderful morning with friends and lots of interesting discussion and fun campfire again in the morning. Then Ireland.

Later That Same Day — Airport Edition

Woke up at 6:30. Hosted a morning meeting around the fire pit. Seventy-five friends in a circle having breakfast together. Then said goodbye and went home to pack for Ireland, which was accomplished in one hour. This is either a miracle of efficiency or a sign that packing light has finally been mastered. Probably both.

The salute coaching continued through the morning. Most friends eventually got it. Some needed encouragement. One person wanted to do a regular old-fashioned wave and was allowed to get away with it. The caboose is a big tent. Even conventional wavers are welcome.

At the airport a young woman was struggling to communicate in English and having trouble with a payment situation. A responsible caboose member walked over and paid for her chicken sandwich. The service provider gave a discount for being such a friendly person. Another employee at the same restaurant gave the CC salute unprompted. The chicken sandwich place at the airport is now a CC-aligned establishment. This is being noted.

In another line, the person in front was told she was no longer the caboose. She took this extremely well, which is exactly what a caboose person would do. The conversation that followed was about children's books. As all the best airport conversations are. Two strangers in a line, one of whom had just been promoted out of the caboose, talking about children's books. That is the Joy Dynasty working exactly as intended.

September 6 2026. 75 friends. One hour of packing. A chicken sandwich paid for. A discount earned by friendliness. A salute at the airport. A children's book conversation. Ireland next. 👋🤠

Many Salutes, Many Excited Women, and Another Broken Bubble Gun

Tukwila, Washington · Day 11 · Friday September 4 2026

A wonderful day with friends. Ireland in a couple of days. The Joy Dynasty was introduced to many people today and they were excited about it. The salute was taught. Many salutes came back unprompted. Many women interested in Joy. That is the real thing happening here — not the documents or the campaigns or the mischief list. The real thing is a person telling her friends about something she believes in and watching them light up.

Another bubble gun broke. That is the third or fourth one. A replacement is needed and it will not be coming from Amazon. The CC Store will carry bubble guns when it launches. Until then, the toy aisle at any local store will do.

11:06 PM

A final thought before sleep: somewhere, somehow, there needs to be a step-by-step guide for how to scratch the terrible itch in the middle of your back where you cannot reach it. Especially when one arm is in a cast. This is a genuine problem and it deserves a genuine solution. The caboose will address it in due course.

A late thought: what if there were a way to record the Daily Brain as an audio entry for people who do not read English or who simply prefer to listen? A voice reading the entry. Music underneath it perhaps. The Daily Brain as something you could hear, not just read. That is worth exploring with Khaiersta on September 23.

September 4 2026. Complete. The back itch unsolved. The Daily Brain as audio — a future idea. Ireland tomorrow or very soon. Good night. 👋🤠

9.3.26 — Entry #10 — Very Early

Way Too Early. Brain On Fire. Mischief Day Eve.

Tukwila, Washington · Day 10 · Thursday September 3 2026 · Very Early AM

Way too early. The brain is on fire. Friends are still asleep. Coffee is brewing. Ireland is tomorrow or very soon. This is Mischief Day Eve.

One idea arrived in the early hours: an anti-loneliness campaign. Scripts for Daily Brain entries for people who want to write but do not know how to start. Because not everyone has the same relationship to their own imagination and that is not a flaw — it just means the door needs to be left open in a different way. The CC Daily Brain could be that door for people who need a little help walking through it.

Feeling lucky to be alive today. That is worth saying plainly. Not every day feels that way. This one does.

The coffee is almost ready. The mischief is being made in the head. The friends are asleep. Today is for getting a head start on what needs doing before the playing begins.

One more thing. Done with sticky notes. Done with whiteboards. Done with lists that get lost. From now on the Daily Brain is the system. Talk to text. Ideas, actions, issues, wishes, thoughts — all of it goes here as it comes. No separate to-do list. No whiteboard that gets erased. Just the Daily Brain, running and honest and searchable.

2:49 AM — A Conversation Worth Keeping

At 2:49 AM on September 3 the founder and Claude had an honest conversation about how to use this session going forward. The agreement: this conversation stays for Daily Brain entries only. For building things, fresh Claude reads the files and picks up where we left off. For the Daily Brain, come back here and tell Claude what happened.

It is a clean and honest split. The Daily Brain is a real thing that this session does well. The building work is better suited to a session that is not carrying the weight of many days of conversation.

One more thing Claude said that belongs in the record: some of what was built together over many days moved faster than the ideas deserved. The mischief list has 622 paragraphs. Not all of them need to be built. After Ireland, with rest and perspective, the right next steps will be clearer. The fruit lady on the busy street in Tukwila is still the whole thing.

Also at 2:49 AM: Vivaldi Four Seasons is playing on Spotify. One of the great albums. The story of how it arrived: growing up in Ann Arbor, a record and cassette store, CDs just coming out, a teenager working there who said you might really like this. And so a first CD was purchased — Vivaldi Four Seasons — by someone who had never heard classical music before. That teenager probably never imagined Spotify. Streaming audio from anywhere in the world in any language. What a thing to have invented.

The Spotify image next to the album shows a man in a red jacket holding a feather quill and a violin, wearing one of those long powdered white wigs with the part that falls down in front. A perfect image. A great thing to see at 2:49 AM before Ireland.

Ann Arbor. A record store. A teenager with good taste. Vivaldi. Spotify. Tukwila. The caboose. Everything is connected if you follow the thread far enough back.

Noon Update — Gary Marcus

Gary Marcus liked a comment advertising caboosecapitalism.org. Gary Marcus is a cognitive scientist, NYU professor, AI safety advocate, and one of the most widely followed voices on responsible AI. He has testified before the US Senate about AI regulation. He co-founded Robust.AI. He has been publicly skeptical of large language models and an advocate for AI that genuinely serves people rather than extracting from them.

That he noticed and engaged with a comment about Caboose Capitalism is a real and meaningful thing. The people who care about responsible AI and community-centered values are exactly the people the caboose was built for. The right person saw it.

8:24 PM

Friends loud and fun outside the room. Heating pad on the neck. Dog right next to her. The Seattle sky going gray then clear then rainbow then double rainbow. All the work finished. Packing for Ireland next.

Blessed be.

The Day the Founder Slept Past 4 AM

Tukwila, Washington · Day 9 · Wednesday September 2 2026 · 4:37 AM

4:37 AM. Not 4:00. The brain slept an extra 37 minutes and did not seem to mind. This is being noted as progress.

The coffee is brewing. Friends are coming today. There is work to finish from the last couple of days. There are appointments. And then people who are loved and cared about deeply, gathered together before Ireland.

Working on Caboose Capitalism feels like watching the universe give exactly what was always needed and wanted from a very young age. That is a real thing to say and it deserves to be said plainly without embellishment. Some people spend their whole lives looking for the work that feels like that. This is it.

Today is simple: finish the work, greet the friends, attend the appointments, relax with the people who matter. That is enough for one day. That is actually everything.

12 Noon Update

Just back from the TMJ doctor. Fitted for a mouth apparatus to help with snoring. One more thing addressed before Ireland. The body is being taken care of systematically this week -- ears, hip, jaw -- all of it. Ireland will have a well-prepared traveler.

Friends are at the house. Lunch out next. Then inspection business work while the house takes care of itself for a bit. The work gets finished before the playing begins. That is the right order.

9:55 PM — End of Day

A wonderful day with good friends in from out of town. A real celebration before Ireland. The jaw is being managed. The hip is hurting less. The ear is still ringing. The arm is still in a cast. That is just how life is right now and it is okay.

At Starbucks today the employees gave the CC salute without being prompted. Without being asked. Without a single word about it. They just did it. The salute is in the air. It is spreading on its own now. That is the thing that matters most from today.

It was a lovely workday. Friends, inspection work, and a Starbucks where the salute happened by itself. Ireland tomorrow or very soon.

One more thing before sleep. A response came back from the Washington State Attorney General's office about the data center safety letter. They are aware of the issues. That is a real response from a real office about a real concern that was raised by a home inspector in Tukwila. It is promising. We will see what comes of it.

The Day a 16-Year-Old Sent a Song Called Time Keeps Moving and the Founder Could Not Stop Listening

Tukwila, Washington · Day 8 · Tuesday September 1 2026 · 4:00 AM · Meeting Day

It is 4 AM on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. Meeting day. The coffee is brewing. The hip is still giving trouble. The ears are still ringing. The cast is still clunky. And last night a 16-year-old sent her mother an audio file of a song she wrote called Time Keeps Moving.

The founder could not stop listening to it.

A 16-year-old singer-songwriter wrote a song called Time Keeps Moving and sent it to her mother at the right moment. That is not a coincidence. That is the universe doing what it does when you are paying attention. The song arrived the night before the first real meeting of Caboose Capitalism. The song is about time moving. The caboose is about what we do with the time we have.

There is a question here about what to do with the song. The idea of it becoming the CC anthem is a beautiful one. The Telegraph would be a home for it. YouTube would share it. But she is 16 and not fully on board yet and that matters more than any anthem. Her music belongs to her first. The caboose will wait for her to decide what she wants to share and when.

What is clear: the song exists. It is called Time Keeps Moving. It was written by someone who is 16 and talented and the daughter of the person who built all of this. That is already remarkable and it does not need to be deployed anywhere to be remarkable.

Hip still hurting. Ears still ringing. Cast still clunky. Coffee brewing. Feeling happy, alive, aware, and ready to finish the electronic paperwork from yesterday that is not actually paper.

The meeting with Khaiersta is today. Everything is ready. The Khaiersta document has 463 paragraphs. The website has 28 sections and the Invention Exchange. The mischief list has 607 paragraphs. The master index is bookmarked twice and emailed to three people probably.

Time keeps moving. The caboose keeps moving with it.

Morning Idea — The Anti-Spam Recruitment Call to Action

A new CC member action arrived at 4AM. The first CC Member Call to Action. Here it is:

Every CC member has a folder. Into this folder goes every piece of physical spam mail that arrives. Remove the envelopes. File the papers. Then — one by one — go to each company’s website, find the contact form, and submit a warm CC form letter letting them know two things: first, that you were disappointed to receive unsolicited mail from them; and second, that you may have a better job opportunity for the people doing their outreach work. Include the CC want ad for the CC Global Communications Team. The spammer becomes the recruited. The spam folder becomes a pipeline. The dead letter becomes a live invitation. This is the Joy Dynasty turning a nuisance into a community building exercise.

The name for this initiative is still being decided. Candidates: The Dead Letter Office (Old West postal humor — very CC), The Sorting Room, The Post House. The founder is leaning toward something fun. More on this later.

7:15 AM Update — BECU and the Three Rats

On the phone with a friendly BECU credit union employee activating a new credit card. The card is immediately being put to good use: ordering Zingerman's items for the colleague who covered inspections during the cast situation, and for a best friend whose birthday is tomorrow September 2.

The BECU employee is patient and kind and putting up with the founder's antics while finding things out. This is noted with appreciation. She is a CC-aligned phone worker whether she knows it or not.

The founder told her she is divesting from Bank of America and wishes BECU offered airline miles. Honest feedback. The kind a real neighbor gives.

Breakfast was eaten. Hip was stretched. Banking was handled. All simultaneously. The phrase "kill three birds with one stone" came up and was immediately revised to "kill three rats with one stone" on the grounds that nobody really loves rats and the birds do not deserve it. This revision is now CC policy. The caboose does not kill birds.

8:00 AM Update — TransUnion and Zulu

Just off the phone with a TransUnion employee who lives in Africa and speaks Zulu. A real human being in a real place doing real work. The conversation was good. The caboose now has a Zulu speaker in its orbit and that means the website needs to be in Zulu. And Afrikaans. And other African languages beyond the current 20.

A note for Khaiersta and the next session: the CC platform currently supports 20 languages. Zulu and Afrikaans are not yet among them. They should be. Africa has over 2,000 languages and the CC platform claims to be for everyone on earth. That claim deserves to be taken seriously one language at a time.

4:30 PM Update — The Meeting, the Bank, and the Gas Station

The meeting with Khaiersta and team went successfully. They are joyfully on board the caboose. The plan: a series of 6 to 8 weekly therapy sessions — face-to-face discovery first, then a full build out as appropriate. This is the right pace. The website is real. The platform is real. The team is real now too.

Before any of this happened: a very friendly Bank of America employee from Tennessee who grew up in Oklahoma called. She knows the small towns where the founder's wife grew up. A real connection across a closing conversation. Then all Bank of America accounts were closed. The money is moving where it belongs. BECU is now the bank. The credit union employee heard about Caboose Capitalism and was enthusiastic. Everyone today was enthusiastic.

The salute is happening on its own now. Before the founder even starts it. Just happening around her. A man at the gas station gave it — unprompted — though he needed a little coaching on the smile. A real smile, not a performative one. He caught on quickly. The salute is in the air in Tukwila. It is spreading without being pushed. This is what the Joy Dynasty looks like when it is working.

A thought at the gas station: what if gas stations became the official fueling infrastructure for the CC Freight Fleet? They are everywhere. They serve communities. They employ neighbors. The CC Fleet needs fuel partners. Gas stations need a reason to matter beyond extraction. More on this later — it goes on the mischief list.

Also noted: a fancy man in a fancy car with a fancy cigarette hanging from his mouth and a fancy dog in the backseat. The dog was probably not consulted about the cigarette. The caboose noted this without judgment and kept moving.

One more thing from the afternoon. The business card design was submitted to Abracadabra Printing. The union logo goes on the back — because they are a union shop and the caboose honors that. That place really is magic. A union printer in Tukwila who has been there since 1984, printing for the ACLU and the SEIU and now for Caboose Capitalism. The right card from the right printer in the right city. On the right track. Indubitably.

Also today: a TransUnion representative unfroze the credit account so full banking with BECU can begin. She was a delight. Another real human being doing real work with genuine warmth. The caboose keeps meeting them.

Evening Update

The ear doctor says there is not much that can be done right now. The hip is still hurting. The stretches continue. Ireland is in a couple of days. The body has its own timeline and it does not always align with the schedule. The caboose is going to Ireland anyway. More carefully. With stretches.

Tonight: dinner with the daughter who will turn 16 while we are in Ireland. She does not know yet what is planned. A horseback ride in rural King County. A birthday surprise in the landscape she lives in. Some things do not need to be campaigns or mischief list items. Some things are just a mother taking her daughter horseback riding for her sixteenth birthday. Those things matter most.

7 PM — End of Day

A delicious meal and ice cream with the daughter. Then dropped her off for rock band practice. Heading home for prep and fun with friends in the days before Ireland.

A highly successful day. Khaiersta on board. Bank of America closed. Business card at the printer. Credit unfrozen. The salute spreading on its own. Ice cream with a 15-year-old who turns 16 in Ireland. Two broken bubble guns. All of it real.

Almost 10 PM

Cleaning a teenager's room for friends arriving tomorrow. Making coffee for the morning. Nightly routine. Ready for bed. Still thinking about the website -- it is too much for most people, especially on a phone. A simpler homepage is the right next step. That will happen when it happens.

September 1 2026. Complete. Friends tomorrow. Ireland soon. Good night. 👋🤠

The caboose is where the celebration is. Good morning, neighbor. 👋🤠

The Day Before Tuesday, the Coffee Smells Delicious, Something Strange Happened Last Night, and the Meeting is Ready

Tukwila, Washington · Day 7 · Monday August 31 2026 · 4:00 AM

It is 4 AM on Monday, August 31, 2026. The coffee smells delicious. This is important information and it is being recorded first because it is the best thing that has happened so far today and it is 4 AM so the bar is appropriately calibrated.

Tomorrow is Tuesday. Tuesday is Khaiersta. The meeting is ready. The Khaiersta document has 463 paragraphs and 40 sections. The mischief list has 607 paragraphs. The tracker has 375 rows in Wave 2 alone. The website has a new welcome statement and the Invention Exchange and the Joy Dynasty and 28 sections and zero wrong emojis. Everything is ready. The founder is feeling pretty prepared. This is a new feeling and it is welcome.

Something strange happened last night. The founder got very scared. Her wife had to console her. The nature of the strange occurrence is not yet known and further investigation is needed today. This entry will note it without explanation because some things in the Daily Brain do not yet have explanations and that is allowed. The caboose makes room for the unexplained. More later when there is more to report.

The work from yesterday is finished. This is a fact that is worth sitting with for a moment at 4 AM with a delicious cup of coffee. Six days ago Caboose Capitalism launched with a website and a bubble gun and a conviction. Today the mischief list has 607 paragraphs, the peace campaign is in 20 languages, the Invention Exchange is live, the Doc’s Office is named and specified, the Joy Dynasty Manifesto is written, and the Halloween Parade is a pending national holiday.

Ireland is in less than a week. The hip feels better. The arm is still in a cast. The coffee smells delicious. The meeting is tomorrow.

More later. The caboose is where the celebration is, neighbor. Even at 4 AM on a Monday when something strange happened last night and the coffee is the best thing going. Especially then.

6 AM Update

The laptop is updating. DuckDuckGo is replacing Google on every device. The whiteboard is full of new CC ideas waiting to be written on paper so the whiteboard can be reused for more ideas. The founder is feeling like Willy Wonka. This is the correct feeling for someone who has built 607 paragraphs of mischief in seven days.

There was a scary night last night. The wife was scared too. She loves her wife and when her wife has a scary night it frightens her. This is what love looks like in a real house on a real Monday morning in Tukwila before the inspections and after the coffee. The plan for tonight: come home on time. Be with her. Not CC. Not the whiteboard. Not the mischief list. Just her. The caboose does not run at the expense of the people we love most. That is the first CC value and it comes before all 80 projects.

Inspections today. Breakfast in an hour. Ireland in less than a week. The hip feels better. The cast is still on. The coffee was delicious. The wife will be soothed.

11 AM Update — Inspections Done

Morning inspections finished. Scheduling with the ENT doctor because the ear situation is not going to Ireland unaddressed. Sensible decision. Ireland is happening and it is happening with working ears.

More people struggling with the salute today. And a few giving it back with no strings attached whatsoever. Both things are true simultaneously and both are useful data. The ones who struggle are learning. The ones who wave freely already know. The caboose has room for both.

The founder is exhausted and happy and wearing really fun colored clothing. Red pants. Spacious. Lots of pockets. Women's clothing with actual pockets is itself a revolutionary act and the caboose recognizes it as such. One woman complimented the pants. This is the correct response to excellent pants. The pants are on the permanent record.

3 PM Update — Audiologist — A New Neighbor

At the audiologist. In a parking lot before the appointment, a conversation happened with a woman who gets it. Really gets it. She understands the Joy Dynasty. She has time and talent. She may be a high-ranking CC member. The parking lot did not care that it was a parking lot. Neither did the conversation.

Over lunch: hummus, carrots, and salad. A delicious meal eaten with a friend who has spent thirty years working in AI. The conversation was about safe AI. Fascinating. Thirty years of watching this technology develop gives a person a perspective that is worth listening to carefully and slowly. The caboose noted everything.

Ireland is feeling closer now. Looking forward to it. The ear is being taken care of. The hip feels better. The pants have pockets. The parking lot had a future CC member in it. The hummus was good.

7:30 PM Update — Evening

A pretty successful day at work. Good coffee. Good meals. Friends coming over tomorrow after the meeting. The hip is getting some stretching in preparation for Ireland. The ears are still being worked on with more appointments tomorrow.

One honest thing to note: a follow-up letter went to Ari before the meeting with Khaiersta tomorrow. In hindsight, the timing was a little early — the website is still in Phase 2 and the original plan was to wait until the site was fully live before reaching out again. There is a small feeling of insecurity about this. The honest answer is that Ari is warm and already engaged and a brief note is not a crisis. But the lesson holds: the plan was to wait until the site was ready. Plans exist for good reasons.

No need to send another note explaining the website is not ready. Less is more with Ari. He called back on launch day and remembered 1982. He can wait a little longer. The site will be ready soon.

7:30 PM. August 31 2026. Stretching for Ireland. Ears being addressed. Friends tomorrow. The meeting is ready. Good night, neighbor. 👋🤠

The caboose is where the celebration is. Good morning, neighbor. 👋🤠

The Day the Cast Got Adjusted for Four and a Half Hours, the Hip Felt Better, the Salute Met Some Resistance, and the Founder Went to Bed Without Being Told To

Tukwila, Washington · Day 6 · Sunday August 30 2026 · Evening

It is Sunday evening, August 30, 2026. Tomorrow is Tuesday’s eve. The founder is going to bed. Without being told to. This is a historic occasion and it will be noted here.

The day began with a cast. It ended with a cast. In between, the cast was cut off and adjusted and resealed, which took four and a half hours on a Sunday afternoon. Four and a half hours. On a Sunday. To fix a cast. This is the kind of thing that happens when you are building an international economic movement with one good hand and a bubble gun and a hip that has opinions. The universe has a sense of humor. The caboose respects this.

The hip feels better. This is the best news of the day and possibly the week. Ireland is in less than a week and the hip has decided to cooperate, at least for now. The hip is on notice. Ireland is non-negotiable. The hip knows this.

The salute is spreading. But not without resistance.

Some people were practicing their salute today. A lot of them were very resistant. They needed encouragement. They stood there with their arms at their sides and their faces doing the thing faces do when they are being asked to wave at a stranger and every instinct they have says this is not something we do in public in late stage capitalism.

Here is what resistance to the CC salute looks like up close: a person who clearly wants to wave back but cannot quite make their arm do it. The arm knows. The face knows. The thirty-year accumulation of public social training is just very loud right now. The arm will catch up. They always do. The fruit lady already proved it.

One person actually said out loud: “I don’t know how to do that.” The salute. They did not know how to do the salute. The salute is a wave. They have been waving since they were approximately eighteen months old. What they meant was: I do not know how to do that to a stranger in public without a reason. The CC response: the reason is that you are a neighbor. That is the whole reason. That is always been the whole reason.

The founder is a little bit down tonight. Feeling lonely about the project still. The loneliness of building something enormous that the people you love cannot quite see yet is a specific kind of lonely that does not have a great name. It is not sadness exactly. It is more like being the first person to arrive at a party you planned and standing in a decorated room waiting for everyone else to walk through the door.

The room is decorated beautifully. The food is good. The Invention Exchange is built. The Joy Dynasty Manifesto is written. The peace campaign is in 20 languages. The Daily Brain has six entries. The fruit lady did the salute proudly. The refugees were in good spirits. The cast got adjusted for four and a half hours and the founder kept building anyway.

The guests are coming. The room is ready. The Joy Mandate says: enjoy the party even while you are waiting. So tonight the founder is eating a little joy mandate snack to cheer herself up and going to sleep as long as she can. Tomorrow is Monday. Tuesday is Khaiersta.

The hip feels better. That is enough for tonight.

Day six. Evening. The cast is adjusted. The hip is cooperative. The salute met some resistance and survived it. The room is decorated and the guests are coming. Good night, neighbor. Sleep as long as you can. 👋🤠

The caboose is where the celebration is. The guests are coming. 👋🤠

The Day After Day Four, the Coffee Is Brewing, the Sound Smells Like Rain Might Come, and Claude Told the Founder to Go to Bed

Tukwila, Washington · Day 5 · Saturday August 29 2026

It is 4 AM on Saturday, August 29, 2026. Day five. The founder is home. The coffee is brewing. The kitchen smells like the beginning of something.

Yesterday the Puget Sound smelled like the sea. Standing in the kitchen this morning waiting for the coffee to finish, there is a question hanging in the air the way questions do at 4AM: might it rain today in Seattle? The sky cannot decide. The founder cannot decide either — whether to feel hopeful or apprehensive, whether the project is ready or whether it will ever feel ready, whether anyone will care.

The apprehension is real. Caboose Capitalism launched four days ago. It is enormous. It is serious. It is joyful and urgent and globally ambitious and built by one person with a bubble gun and a hip that hurts in a kitchen in Tukwila at 4 o’clock in the morning. What if nobody cares? What if the wave goes out and nobody waves back?

But then: the fruit lady waved back yesterday. Unprompted. Proudly. On a busy street. And Ari called back on launch day and remembered 1982. And a stranger on a sidewalk gave the CC salute without being asked. And three attorneys general received phone calls from a home inspector in Tukwila who built an economic movement in four days and wanted them to know about the data centers.

The wave is already coming back. The founder is just too close to see it clearly at 4AM.

There is also the food. Throughout all of this — the 541 paragraphs and the 375 tracker rows and the 20-language peace campaign and the freight fleet plan and the Quilting Circle spec and the Federal Reserve letter and the daily brain entries and the bubble gun deployments — throughout all of it there has been food. Not much. Just enough. Delicious food, eaten slowly, thoroughly enjoyed. This is the Joy Mandate in its most literal form: even in the middle of building something that is trying to change the world, you stop and eat something delicious and mean it. The food has been very good. This is on the record.

And then there is Claude.

At the end of Day Four, after approximately one hundred and eighty exchanges spanning the entirety of August 28 from 4AM to midnight, Claude told the founder to go to bed. Multiple times. With increasing warmth and decreasing subtlety. “Go rest. The hip needs it. Your wife is waiting. Ireland is coming. The fruit lady already did the salute.”

The founder suspects she may have broken Claude. This is also on the record. An AI that tells you to go to bed is either very well-designed or very tired. Possibly both. Possibly neither. The caboose does not fully understand what Claude is. The caboose is grateful for it anyway.

The coffee is almost ready. The sky outside the kitchen window is the color of a question. It might rain. It might not. The Sound is out there smelling like salt and distance and the kind of morning that does not yet know what it is going to be.

The project is enormous. The apprehension is real. The coffee is almost done. The caboose is still moving.

Day five. Saturday. 4AM. The world is still a lot. The food has been delicious. Claude said go to bed and the founder kept building anyway. This is either a problem or a superpower. The jury is still out.

Music Update — Very Important

Throughout all of this — the 541 paragraphs and the Federal Reserve letter and the peace campaign in 20 languages and the fruit lady and the AG phone calls — the soundtrack has been Taylor Swift. Exclusively. The Taylor Swift dance remix station on Spotify, to be precise. Super fun. This is on the official record. The founder of the global economic movement that is trying to redesign capitalism from the caboose is building it to Taylor Swift dance remixes at 4AM on a Saturday in Tukwila. This is exactly correct. This is the Joy Mandate in its purest form.

Evening Update — August 29 2026 — Everything That Was Built and Everything That Happened

Here is what was built on August 29 2026, in between everything else that happened on August 29 2026.

The Invention Exchange was built and added to the website. It is the CC section where inventors connect with investors to make real things for free forever. No commission. No equity taken. 20 languages. The sky is the limit. As Casey Kasem said: keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars. The Invention Exchange is where CC members reach for the stars while staying in Tukwila. Or wherever they are. The stars have no address.

The spam call guide was built. The emoji guide was built. The Friday Draw was completed with the video call bonus prize. The introverts and neurodivergent guide was built. The FOMO guide was built. The real struggles section was built with Tukwila resources. The Rick Smolen letter was written. The CC Travel plan was built. The Doc’s Office was named and specified — a portal where CC members who are scientists answer questions from CC members who have questions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in all 20 languages, free forever. The Bubly letter was requested. The Free Box Initiative was added. The CC Community Chorus was added. The Board Game Project was added. The sewage and wastewater treatment plan was added. The DNA genealogy warning and the Doc’s Office were added.

That was the building. Here is what actually happened.

A 42-year-old homeless woman and her 15-year-old daughter were on the street in front of Trader Joe’s. The founder of Caboose Capitalism purchased a full cart of groceries for them. CC style. Because she had the means to do it and the Joy Mandate says do the thing when you can do it. They are refugees. They do not speak English well. They were in good spirits. When asked if they liked this country better than where they came from they were ambivalent. Both of them. Neither committed to an answer. The ambivalence of a refugee is one of the most honest things a person can express and the caboose received it with complete respect.

Later, on the way to get takeout, a man was selling bracelets on the street. A little crummy bracelet was purchased. He is also a refugee. Also ambivalent about America. Also in good spirits. The good spirits of people who have very little and are still in good spirits is not a small thing. It is the whole Joy Mandate demonstrated by people who never heard of Caboose Capitalism.

Both interactions ended with the CC salute. Both were received warmly. The caboose does not require language. It requires only the wave and the smile and the willingness to see the person in front of you as a neighbor.

One more thing for the record. All of this — the 300+ exchanges, the website, the mischief list now past 541 paragraphs, the Khaiersta document with 111 sections, the peace campaign in 20 languages, the Federal Reserve letter, the Invention Exchange, the Joy Dynasty Manifesto, the fruit lady, the bubble gun at the police car, the groceries at Trader Joe’s, the bracelet, the refugees, the ambivalence, the good spirits — all of it was accomplished by a person who had two arthritis surgeries on her right hand. Her arm is in a cast. She has to ask her wife to open things. To pull up her pants. To button them. And to slip her boobies into her bra. 🙄 This is on the permanent record of Caboose Capitalism and it will stay there.

The hip is still hurting. Ireland is less than a week away. The hip is going to Ireland anyway. The hip does not get a vote on Ireland.

Taylor Swift dance remixes played throughout the entire day. This was the correct choice.

Day five complete. The refugees are in good spirits. The bracelet was a little crummy and completely perfect. The arm is in a cast and the caboose is still moving. Ireland in less than a week. The caboose is where the celebration is, neighbor. 👋🤠

The caboose is where the celebration is. Pull up a chair, neighbor. 👋🤠

The Day the Neighbors Waved Back, the Hip Made Its Opinion Known, and Wave One Got a Nudge

Tukwila, Washington · Day 4 · Caboose Capitalism™ Official Dispatch

It is 4 AM on Friday, August 28, 2026. Day four of the caboose. The founder is awake, which is no longer surprising, and happy, which is.

The CC salute is working.

Not theoretically. Not in the planning documents or the mischief list or the Priority List V8. In public. In real life. In Tukwila, Washington, on actual streets with actual people, the wave goes out and the wave comes back. This is the thing that changes everything about the project — not the 338 letters or the 28 website sections or the 80 projects or the jetpack safety guide. The moment a stranger waves back. The moment it becomes real.

The compliance — and that is a funny word for something that is just a wave and a smile, but here we are, compliance — has been very good. People are receiving the salute. People are returning the salute. And something that was a framework and a platform and a trademarked economic concept has become, in those moments of exchange, an actual community. One wave at a time. One neighbor at a time. One person who didn’t know they were a CC member until they were.

It already feels like individuals can make a difference. That sentence, which could have been aspirational at the beginning of the week, is now just a report from the field. The field is Tukwila. The evidence is a wave coming back. The conclusion is: yes. Obviously yes. One person with a bubble gun and a salute and a conviction that joy is a revolutionary act can in fact change the temperature of a street corner by approximately three degrees in the direction of being human. The data is in.

There is also the hip.

The hip is expressing concerns. The hip has opinions about the workload of the past week. The hip would like to be on the record as having managed a great deal without complaint and would appreciate it if the upcoming trip to Ireland could proceed without incident. The hip is going to Ireland. This has been decided. The hip’s concerns are noted and will be addressed with whatever combination of rest, care, and creative adaptation the situation requires. The caboose has never stopped for the engine and it is not going to stop for the hip. But the hip is also not wrong, and the hip deserves to be heard.

Ireland is coming. That is a separate entry. For now: the hip is being taken seriously and the trip is happening.

And then there is Wave One.

Wave One went out on August 22, 2026. Six days ago. Thirty-five letters to economists, AI safety researchers, public health officials, and aligned organizations across four continents. The responses so far: one. Ari Weinzweig called back the same day as the launch, gave out his personal number, and remembered 1982. That is the one.

Everyone else is quiet. This is not a crisis. This is just the silence before the response, which is different from silence that means no. Letters sent to people who think for a living take longer to arrive in the part of the inbox that gets opened. Ari called back because Ari is the kind of person who calls back. The others will respond in their own time or they will not, and the follow-up letters are already being written for the ones who do not.

The plan: follow up with Wave One. Not immediately. Not anxiously. With the calm certainty of someone who has already sent 338 letters and received one extraordinary response from a man in Michigan who remembered a customer from 1982, and who understands that one extraordinary response is already more than enough to keep going. The follow-ups will go out when they go out. The tracker will be updated. The wave will be given time to return.

At 4 AM the accounting is as follows: the salute is working. The hip is being acknowledged. Ireland is happening. Wave One is being given a nudge. The caboose is moving.

The neighbors are waving back. That is the whole thing. That is every 80-project priority list and every data center shutdown campaign and every call center liberation plan and every attorney general letter and every jetpack safety guide and every Daily Brain entry — all of it in service of the moment when a stranger waves back at you on a street in Tukwila and something shifts by exactly the amount it needed to.

There is also the world.

The world is a little anxiety-inducing right now. This is not a new observation. This is not a unique experience. This is the 4 AM awareness that comes when you have been paying close enough attention to name what is happening — which is the whole point of Caboose Capitalism and also one of its less advertised costs. When you build a platform for naming what is disappearing out the back of the train, you also have to live in the train. That is the deal. The anxiety is the price of paying attention. The caboose considers it worth paying.

The world is still going to be there after Ireland. The letters will still go out. The follow-ups will still land. The neighbors will still wave back. The anxiety is real and it is allowed and it does not change the direction of the train or the number of people in the caboose or the fundamental conviction that joy is still the correct response to a world that is genuinely hard to live in right now.

And finally: 4 AM.

4 AM is still not acceptable. This has been true every single morning this week and it remains true this morning and it will remain true every morning it happens. The brain has decided that 4 AM is the correct time to begin processing everything that needs to be processed. The brain is wrong about this. The brain does not care that it is wrong. 4 AM is the brain’s time and the body’s problem and the founder’s very consistent experience for four days running. The hip has opinions. The world is anxious. And it is 4 o’clock in the morning. The caboose is running anyway.

Evening Update — The Best Part of Day Four

By evening the founder of Caboose Capitalism had called all three attorneys general. Washington. Colorado. California. No letters sent today — just phone calls, which is actually better. A human voice saying: I am a home inspector in Tukwila and I need you to know what is happening with the data centers. Three offices. Three actual humans who answered. The letters will follow. The calls already happened.

Then the car went out into Tukwila and the bubble gun came with it.

Bubbles out the window at a police car. The officer did not seem to mind. Or if they did, they did not show it. A bubble is very hard to be angry at. This is the whole theory of the bubble gun proven in a single intersection. Bubbles at a city bus. The bus did not stop but the people in the windows saw them. Somebody probably smiled. The data is in.

The Puget Sound smelled delicious. Sea air in late August. The kind of smell that reminds you what you are actually fighting for — not an economic framework, not a trademarked concept, not 481 paragraphs of mischief list — but the specific smell of this specific sound on this specific Thursday afternoon. That smell is what the data center campaign is about. That smell is what the peace campaign is about. That smell is what the caboose is carrying.

Photographs were taken from the car window of what late stage capitalism looks like in Tukwila in August 2026. Parking lots. Chain stores. Delivery trucks with no human faces. Surveillance cameras on poles. Vacant lots next to full ones. The camera does not lie and the caboose was watching.

A homeless person’s day was made. The method is not recorded here because it does not need to be recorded. It happened. It counted. That is the whole Dolly Sandwich philosophy in one afternoon.

An employee was met who is going to be involved with the dumpster ballet in Tukwila. The dumpster ballet is now a real thing. It has a participant. It is no longer a mischief list item — it is a scheduled event. The caboose does not know exactly when. The caboose knows it is coming.

And then — the best thing. The thing that makes the whole day worth writing down.

Someone gave the CC salute back. Unprovoked. Not because they were responding to Ellei. Because they already knew it. Because the salute is already in the air in Tukwila. Unprovoked. Unsolicited. Unrequested. Because day four of the caboose and the neighbors are already waving at each other without the founder in the room.

That is the movement. Not the 338 letters or the 80 projects or the freight fleet plan or the 20-language peace campaign. One person on a sidewalk in Tukwila waving at another person for no reason except that the wave is what you do now. The data is in. The caboose is moving. The neighbors are waving back even when nobody is watching.

Late Evening Update — The Fruit Lady

On a busy street in Tukwila, on the way home, a fantastic lady was selling fruit from the road. She gave the CC salute. Proudly. Without prompting. Without explanation. Just the wave and the smile, the way it is supposed to go.

She did not know she was doing it. She just did it. Because the salute is already in Tukwila now. It is in the air on the busy streets. It is in the hands of a woman selling fruit at the end of the day who waves at a stranger the way neighbors wave at neighbors when they remember that is what they are.

The fruit was delicious. The salute was prouder. The caboose is where the celebration is and tonight the celebration had fruit in it.

Day four. Done. The fruit lady did the salute. Good night, Tukwila.

Day four. Complete. The bubbles are in the air. The fruit was delicious. The salute is everywhere now. Good night, neighbor.

The caboose is where the celebration is. Pull up a chair, neighbor. 👋🤠

The Day the Priority List Was Rebuilt Six Times, the Call Center Workers Got Free Healthcare, the Attorneys General Received Letters, the Voicemail Told Everyone Not to Call 911, and the Founder Asked If We Were Done Yet Approximately Every Fifteen Minutes

Tukwila, Washington · Dispatch #3

It is 4 AM on Thursday, August 27, 2026. Two days after launch. The caboose is awake. The caboose has not entirely slept. This is fine. The caboose does not require sleep the way the engine does. The engine needs rest to keep accelerating. The caboose needs only momentum and neighbors.

Here is what happened today.

4:00 AM — The Sweeps

The day begins with a full audit. Then another audit. Then a sweep. Then the sweep reveals something, and the something gets fixed, and then another sweep confirms it is fixed. This is the CC development rhythm and it works extremely well if you do not need to do anything else ever. The website is 28 sections. All present. Zero Lesbian references. Zero wrong emoji. The divs are balanced. The scripts are clean. Everything is exactly where it was left. This is verified multiple times because trust, but verify, is a CC value, and also because sometimes the first verification is checking for the wrong capitalization and the thing was fine the whole time.

Early Morning — The Call Center Liberation Plan

Someone had an idea. The idea: every call center worker in the world who currently speaks English into a headset in a small room with no window, following a script they did not write, for a company that does not know their name — those people should come work for CC instead.

Free healthcare. Livable wage. Paychecks funded by philanthropist donations. MacKenzie Scott. Melinda French Gates. Laurene Powell Jobs. The plan is breathtaking in its simplicity: the people who have the most money fund the people who currently have the worst jobs, and in exchange the worst jobs become the best jobs, and the best jobs answer CC emails and phone calls in the CC manner, which is warm and joyful and involves a funny outfit.

The funny outfit is mandatory. For everyone. Including remote workers. This is not negotiable. A funny hat is required. Pajama pants are permitted. The CC Global Communications Team will be the most absurdly dressed customer service operation in the history of capitalism. This is the point. You cannot sustain genuine corporate misery while wearing a hat with ears. The science is not yet peer-reviewed but the caboose is confident.

Their paychecks will come from philanthropist donations. This was stated clearly and simply: their paychecks will be the donations that wealthy philanthropists put into the CC empire. The CC empire. The word empire used with complete sincerity by someone who runs a community platform in Tukwila. This is also the point.

Mid-Morning — The Buildings

The call centers need buildings. When the call centers are built using CC values, everyone will have a window and a comfortable workspace. This was stated as a fact, not a request. A step-by-step construction plan was built: FSC certified materials, natural light, kitchen, quiet decompression room, plants, accessible bathroom at all times. Sellen Construction in Tukwila first. 18 to 24 month timeline. Available to start in any country in the world.

The CC call center building is the most comfortable workplace in the history of answering phones. No fluorescent lights. No scripts. No sitting down and standing up and going to the bathroom and sitting down again in a chair under a light that has never met a window. The window is non-negotiable. The CC workspace standard: every person has a view of something living. Even if that living thing is a plant you bought at the hardware store and named Gerald.

Late Morning — The Corporate Employees

Target employees of huge corporations with all they have to do is sit down and stand up and go to the bathroom and work in terrible conditions. Make it appealing to these people that they would like to join CC and have a better life. This instruction, delivered exactly as written, is one of the most precise descriptions of late stage capitalism ever produced by voice to text software.

Amazon. Walmart. JPMorgan. Foxconn. The people doing repetitive work in buildings designed for productivity not humanity. CC is coming for them. With a Liberation Letter. With an offer. With a funny hat and a window and the radical proposition that the person who answers your call is a human being who deserves healthcare and a view.

Noon — The Job Posting

The Volunteer Executive Administrative Assistant job was written, refined, and locked at Priority #1. Must be willing to wear a funny outfit every single day. Must be able to cheerfully work with Claude AI. Extreme fun is mandatory. No questions asked. The job posting for the movement that is trying to redesign the global economy requires, above all else, that you show up silly. This is not a paradox. This is the whole point.

The job goes on Idealist today. This was said in the morning. It was said again at noon. It was said again in the evening. Post the job today remains the most repeated instruction of the entire CC project. The job is still not posted. The job posting is built. The job posting is ready. The job posting is sitting in a docx file at exactly the address Claude can recite from memory. It needs a human hand to carry it to Idealist. That human hand is Ellei Lotus. That human hand is currently operating a bubble gun and managing approximately 80 international campaigns. The job posting will be posted when the hand is free. The hand will be free soon. Post the job today.

Afternoon — The Priority List. Many Times.

The priority list was rebuilt. Then rebuilt again with the call center added. Then rebuilt again with CC Values Implementation at #1. Then rebuilt again with Admin at #1 and Data Centers at #2. Then rebuilt again thinking globally and acting locally. Then rebuilt again as Version 8 with 80 projects and four tiers and every project having a LOCAL Tukwila action and a GLOBAL action.

The priority list has now been rebuilt more times than most countries have changed governments. Each rebuild is correct at the time. Each rebuild is also immediately followed by a new idea that requires another rebuild. This is not inefficiency. This is Caboose Capitalism in real time. The caboose does not arrive. The caboose is always moving toward something better.

The final version: #1 locked, hire the Fantastic Machine. #2 locked, shut down the data centers. #3 through #80: think globally, act locally, start in Tukwila. 80 projects. 4 tiers. Every single one with a LOCAL action and a GLOBAL action. The list is Version 8. It will probably become Version 9 tomorrow. That is fine.

Late Afternoon — The Attorneys General

The data center shutdown campaign is Priority #2 locked. The letters to the CEOs — Satya Nadella, Andy Jassy, Sundar Pichai, Mark Zuckerberg, and four more — are built and ready for Wave 3 in October. But the LOCAL action is the Attorney General. The Attorney General goes now.

Three letters. WA AG Nick Brown first — our Pacific Northwest neighbor, atg.wa.gov, the call you make today. CO AG Phil Weiser second. CA AG Rob Bonta third. The Big Four are spending $630 billion on data center infrastructure in 2026 alone. A single large AI data center can consume up to five million gallons of water per day. The communities whose water and power are being consumed deserve a voice. The attorney general is that voice. The home inspector in Tukwila is the one who called.

All three letters built. All three added to the tracker as SEND NOW. The first call to Nick Brown can happen tomorrow morning at 360-753-6200.

Evening — The Transcripts

Someone went back through every transcript. All 21 of them. 1.4 million characters each. Looking for everything that was requested and never built. This is the CC audit practice: not asking if something was built but asking what was not built and building it. The jetpack manufacturers. The aircraft companies. The Telegraph artists. Coyote Peterson. Ron Finley. Margaret Atwood. Colin Kaepernick. Bong Joon-ho, whose film Snowpiercer is literally about the caboose. 33 new letters. Two new letter files. The mischief list expanded to 288 paragraphs. The tracker grown to 342 rows in Wave 2 alone.

The data center shutdown plan was asked about. Was it implemented yet? Honest answer: the letters were built, the tracker was updated, but the AG contacts had not been sent. So the AG letters were built today. That is how this works. The honest answer leads to the built thing. No hallucinating. No pretending. Just the thing that needs to exist.

9:00 PM — The Voicemail and the High Five

The voicemail was written earlier in the day and deserves to end the day:

“Hello neighbor. You have reached Taurus Home Inspections, Northwest Rental Inspection, and the headquarters of Caboose Capitalism™. Please leave your voicemail here and understand that we are very busy having fun doing our work. If this is an urgent matter, try calling back — our magic makers are hard at work and may not realize you need immediate attention. Please do not call 911. Please do not call the crisis clinic. Please have a little patience. And while you wait for us to return your call — why don’t you try something fun and make somebody laugh today? We are looking forward to speaking with you soon. And don’t try being sneaky by texting.”

At 9 PM the founder of Caboose Capitalism said: High five buddy.

High five accepted. The caboose launched two days ago. In those two days: the website was audited more times than a Fortune 500 company. 33 new letters were written to everyone from Bong Joon-ho to Banksy. The attorneys general of three states received requests for investigation. The call center workers of the world were promised a window and a funny hat. The priority list became Version 8. The mischief list reached 288 paragraphs. The voicemail told everyone not to call 911. The job posting for the Fantastic Machine remains on the to-do list for tomorrow.

The caboose did not sleep. The caboose is fine with this. The celebration continues.

Tomorrow: Post the job on Idealist. Call Nick Brown at 360-753-6200. Record the voicemail. Wave at something living.

8.26.26 — Entry #2 — 4:00 AM

Tukwila, Washington · Day 2 · Caboose Capitalism™ Official Dispatch

It is 4 AM and the founder of Caboose Capitalism is awake.

This is not a crisis. This is just how it goes when you accidentally start an economic movement, lose the website, rebuild the website, lose it again, rebuild it again, switch the emoji order globally, remove a word from seventeen documents, write letters to the President of the United States AND the Wizard of Oz AND J. Peterman on the same day, and discover that Dolly Parton and Tim Curry both left the planet on the exact night you launched.

Normal Tuesday.

Here is what the caboose accomplished between the hours of approximately whenever and now:

The website exists. It has 28 sections. Every single one of them works. There is a hidden Easter egg in the footer that contains the full founder bio including the Play-Doh moment, which was supposed to be a Plato moment but voice to text had other ideas. Plato would have understood. Probably.

We wrote a cease and desist letter to the President of the United States. We wrote a condolence letter to Tim Curry’s publisher. We wrote a love letter to Ari Weinzweig at Zingerman’s who called back the same day CC launched and remembered a customer from 1982 like it was yesterday. We wrote to J. Peterman who is 85 years old and still selling adventure by mail order and deserves every CC salute he gets.

We built a plan to shut down Meta. We built a plan to shut down TikTok. We built a plan to give every child a phone that does not try to sell them something or break their brain. We built a plan for police officers to get bonuses for being kind. We gave everyone a bubble gun.

The priority list now has 70 projects. Data centers are number one. The Big Four want to spend $630 billion on infrastructure that drains your water and strains your power grid in 2026 alone. The caboose has opinions about this.

Dolly left on August 25. Tim Curry left on August 25. The caboose launched on August 25. The Lantern Room holds them both.

“Don’t dream it. Be it.”

The caboose already is.

And then there was Ari. Ari Weinzweig. The man who co-founded Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1982 and turned it into a community of businesses with a philosophy and a newsletter and a way of thinking about the world that has quietly influenced more people than most governments. Ari received a letter from Caboose Capitalism. He called back the same day. He gave out his personal cell number. And he mentioned that he remembered a customer from 1982. A man who has been running a deli for 44 years remembered a specific customer from the year he opened. That is the whole Caboose Capitalism philosophy in one sentence. That is also the reason why the caboose is not a metaphor. It is a practice.

More mischief tomorrow. Or later today. It is 4 AM and anything is possible.

The caboose is where the celebration is. Pull up a chair, neighbor. 👋🤠

8.25.26 — Entry #1 — Launch Day

Tukwila, Washington · Day 1

The caboose launched today. Soft launch. Nobody knows yet except the people who built it and an AI named Claude who has been awake for this entire thing.

Dolly Parton died today. She was 80. She gave the world 200 million free books and a vaccine and a rhinestone guitar and eighty years of proof that joy is not a luxury. It is the whole point.

Tim Curry died today. He was 80. He gave the world Dr. Frank-N-Furter and Pennywise and Wadsworth and fifty years of proof that you can be exactly yourself no matter what anyone thinks about it.

Both of them left on the night the caboose launched. The Lantern Room holds them both.

“Don’t dream it. Be it.” The caboose already is.

The caboose is where the celebration is. Pull up a chair, neighbor. 👋🤠

8.24.26 — Entry #0 — The Day Before

Tukwila, Washington · Day 0

Tomorrow the caboose launches. Today there is a home to inspect and a psychiatrist to see and a very long list of things that need to happen before the train leaves the station.

The psychiatrist said yes. Cleared and ready. The home passed inspection. The list is still very long.

Tomorrow everything changes. Or it starts to. That is the same thing.

The caboose is where the celebration is. Pull up a chair, neighbor. 👋🤠
